Alton Towers: A Fun Day Out for the Family

In April I got very, very brave and took my three younger cousins to what is arguably the best theme park in the UK – Alton Towers. And what a huge success it was too!

Alton Towers is located in the countryside, not too far from Uttoxeter, Staffordshire. It is a lovely place set in beautiful gardens and in the grounds of an old manor house type place and I think if you are a visitor to the UK, then you must come here!

The UK is not exactly bursting with theme parks with amazing rides but Alton Towers, back in the day used to boast of having the “Big 6”. Two of those 6, from back in my youth, are sadly no more, but they have made way for bigger and better rides and now I would say that there are at least 8 massive rides to get the adrenalin pumping. These are listed below, in my order of favourites.

OBLIVION – Having been to Alton Towers at least 25 times in my life, I still haven’t been on Obvlivion due to my fear of falling straight down as this is pretty much all this ride does. The website describes it as a “colossal vertical drop” which rules me out right away!

SUBMISSION – I quite like Submission, but often don’t bother going on it as the queues are fairly big and it is essentially a pirate ship type affair which takes you upside down and kind of dangles you there for a bit.

ENTERPRISE – This is one of my old favourites, starting out as a little roundabout, then tilting so that you are always going away from the ground, then back down again, a real rush!

NEMESIS – This is a really popular rollercoaster where your legs dangle freely from the cars. I would describe it as very very fast! The G force on this ride is greater than in a space shuttle launch, apparently!

RITA – Rita is known as the queen of speed, it goes from 0-100 km/hour in 2.5 seconds and it takes your breath away from the start all the way around.

RIPSAW – This is a very interesting take on a water ride, if you can imagine a giant swing, which not only goes all the way over, but also the seat itself is spinning all the time, and there are fountains threatening to soak you through. I like this one a lot.

AIR – Until this year Air was my favourite rollercoaster, not jut here but of any park I have ever been to. You do actually feel like you are flying, due to the fact that you are strapped in in a lying down position. It is loads of fun and always good for pretending to be Superman.

THIRTEEN – This is Alton Towers’ newest ride and I was very afraid to go on it as I had heard rumours of a fall! It boasts of being a psychological ride more than anything else as you have very little idea what is going to happen to you. I loved it in the end, I can’t spoil it by saying too much but all I will say is that when you think it is over, you still have a while to go!

I would recommend it for people of any age as there are shows throughout the day and much tamer rides for younger kids or more scared adults. I am 26 and enjoyed it as much as I did when I was 7 years old. I also took a 10, 14 and 17 year old and they all loved it too! Other great rides include the rapids, log flume, and ghost train laser quest type game.
