Tulips Land

Together with the windmills, tulips fields are the most famous landscape in the Netherlands. In 1593, the first tulip was placed in Dutch soil and since then the country has been in multi-coloured bloom.

I remember, since I was little, tulip has always been my favourite flower, maybe because of the variety and the vibrant colours. Even before I moved to Amsterdam I had “visit tulips fields” in my wish list. Last spring I planned it, in different ways realising that the most interesting and enjoyable would be by bicycle. At the end I was unable to do it…sometimes it happens, when you plan too much of something.

I started this year with that in my mind. The winter was tough but shorter than the last so blooming time was earlier. Once the season started, I was already planning my trip and trying to do the math to schedule the ideal day. Last year I could control it because I used to pass through by train. The thing is that the farmers let the flowers for a couple of weeks and then they’ll start harvesting. You have to choose the perfect time if you want to catch all the colours.

The forecast promised a very good day, sunny and warm! But to cycle with high temperatures, I should leave home early in the morning heading to the South Holland region. After cycling for a couple of hours, suddenly I started seeing some red, pink, and yellow in the horizon. It looked like a sea of colours and it was possible to smell the perfume from afar. Passing through the fields by bicycle felt like a hallucination.

It’s like a “fragrances land”, situated in the flower-growing region of Duin-en Bollenstreek. The sandy soil is highly suitable for the cultivation of bulb flowers since it has exported bulb flowers for centuries worldwide. These dreamy landscapes surround the town, Lisse. Crossing the town, it’s possible to reach the famous Keukenhof Gardens, the world’s most photographed gardens.

It’s easy to spend an entire day wandering around, between the fields and gardens. You definitely can’t get tired of all the different colours and shapes. Breathing in the serenity can give you energy for the rest of the year.

The sun was already down when I arrived home.
