When you’re in the city of Honolulu on Hawaii’s island of Oahu, take a short day trip to Hanauma Bay for snorkeling! Catch some sun, take some pictures, and interact with local wildlife. You’ll be glad you did!
Hanauma Bay is a nature preserve just a little bit outside of Honolulu, Hawaii. Filled with beautiful coral reefs, local fish species…even green sea turtles, it’s an excellent way to spend the day!
Most hotels in Honolulu have information for shuttle services that can take you to and from the bay. You can rent snorkeling equipment, but it’s a good idea to bring a picnic lunch and plenty of sunscreen (I’m SERIOUS about the sunscreen. Floating on your stomach all day may leave you with a VERY sunburned back. There’s no shame in wearing a t-shirt, if it will protect your back so you can enjoy more fun in the sun later.)
You’ll enter the park at the Visitor’s Center where you’ll view a safety video and learn about the wildlife you will likely encounter.
Then, you’ll walk down a hill with spectacular views. Perfect place to take some pictures!
Then, get your equipment and enjoy your time with the fish! The water is calm, beautiful, and about 3 to 4 feet deep. You will be swimming right among the coral and the fish.
Insider’s tip: The farther you swim from shore, the more likely you are to see giant green sea turtles! (Don’t worry, lifeguards will keep an eye on you!)
Have fun and Aloha!
