How it Created Certain Curiosities – A Video on The Sartorialist Scott Schuman

I wanted to post this video for quite some time, just never got around doing so (or simply forgot about it). It features Scott Schuman, who runs the street fashion blog The Sartorialist talking about his work and showing him walking around New York taking photographs.

It’s interesting to hear him talk about his background, what he tries to achieve, what inspires him, … edited against him walking around, always on the look-out for photo opportunities and how he approaches people on the street asking for permission to take a photo (and granted: being a famous blogger helps).

Do you mind if I just do a fast photograph?

Also the video, directed by Tyler Manson, is just great – from the camera movements to the depth of field, how close he gets to the subject, the editing and the choices in music.

It wasn’t really the technical aspect of photography but how it communicated to me, how it created certain curiosities to a kid in the midwest who would look at Vogue or would look at GQ and think “wow, that is really a different world”.

I think this is something many of us can relate to. Regardless what camera we use and what evokes our thoughts of a different world. Also this quote on the internet as a digital park bench is spot on:

Where now with the blog i can take a photograph and have it up on the internet and share it with people across the world. People of this moment can comment on how they feel that looks, how that fits in, if it’s at the moment.

Check out Scott Schuman's fashion blog The Sartorialist – and see the photos covered in the video here. So what do you think? What opened up your world?
