RECAP: Secret School Bus Trip in NYC - April 9th 2011

“Is that our bus?” asked an eager Lomographer pointing out the window to the big yellow school bus parked in front of the Lomography Store. Yes indeed, a real yellow school bus was waiting to transport us to an undisclosed Lomo location. Anticipation was high as many participants had been looking forward to this event for weeks!

All aboard!

After everyone was checked in, we piled into the sold out bus and were on our way. Participants were allowed to borrow just about any Lomography camera they wanted to use. Some went with the classic LC-A, others were excited to try the Spinner 360. The Sprocket Rocket was the most popular choice and we even had a couple people go with the precision of the Lubitel 166+. After gearing up with cameras and plenty of film we were nearing our destination, we had already crossed the Brooklyn Bridge and people were shouting out different places in Brooklyn they thought we might end up. As we saw the Wonder Wheel and the Cyclone in the distance, it became clear where were going.

Coney Island!

“I can’t wait to get a hot dog at Nathan’s!” Someone shouted. It was a beautiful sunny day – perfect for wandering around the boardwalk and snapping a ton of Lomographs. Some people ventured out on to the beach, others explored the parking lots and amusement shops that surround the area. Places, people, things – Lomographic subjects were all around us!

After frantically shooting as much film as we possibly could during our time, those of us who were of age paid homage to Lomo’s Russian roots with a celebratory shot of Vodka at Ruby’s – a Russian bar on the Boardwalk. Salute!

Needless to say, this afternoon was a massive success! New friends were made, hot dogs & caramel apples were eaten and a staggering number of photos were taken to document it all. Sound like fun? We will certainly have more Secret School Bus trips in the near future so keep an eye out and be sure to sign up ahead of time as tickets will definitely sell out!
