London City Escape: Greenwich

1

The south east borough of London, mainly known for giving its name to the Greenwich Meridian, is a perfect place to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

The Royal Observatory in Greenwich has been the topic of many articles and tourist guides, but Greenwich has more to offer than just the observatory and Cutty Sark.

The Queen’s House, Greenwich, is a former royal residence built between 1614-1617 by architect Indigo Jones. It was commissioned by Anne of Denmark, the queen of King James I of England. Queen’s House was built as an adjunct to the Tudor Palace of Greenwich and is one of the most important buildings in British architectural history, being the first consciously classical building to have been constructed in Britain. Now it houses part of The Maritime Museum and is part of the University of Greenwich campus.

The University of Greenwich’s main campus is located on the Grounds of the Old Naval College. Situated on the banks of river Thames, it is the architectural centerpiece of Greenwich. These magnificent buildings and their grounds are regularly used as filming grounds for movies and TV programs. Films include Four Weddings and a Funeral, The Madness of King George, The Mummy Returns, The Avengers (1998), and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) and more recently, The Wolf Man.

Greenwich Park: A former hunting ground, the park in Greenwich is one of the largest green spaces in south east London. It covers 74 hectares (180 acres) and is one of the Royal Parks of London. The park has stunning views over the River Thames, Isle of Dogs and the city of London. During the Olympics in 2012, Greenwich Park will be the venue for the equestrian events and for the riding and running parts of the modern pentathlon events. Greenwich Park is a perfect place for a lazy Sunday with your mates.

Aside from being an immensely talented lomographer, what makes him a perfect LomoGuru is his burning desire to share his knowledge. To keep them motivated, Hugo organizes workshops and tours on different film photography techniques and DIY tricks.
