Kodak EHB (125 iso, 120). How we tortured each other.

I recently bought a batch of this Tungsten film, expired in 1972. I wasn’t expecting things would get so nasty between us.

On the box I could read ‘High Speed Ektachrome’, ‘Tungsten’ and finally ‘Process promptly’, just next to the expiration date (which always makes me smile). On the film itself, ‘safety film’ is written between shot numbers.
All together, these infos make you think ‘Huh???’
Add to this that every time I removed a roll from its foil, there was a deadly stink coming out of the package. To the touch, everything was feeling very dry and old.

The first time I processed it was using a Hybrid Process N°2. At the end of the process, the film was brownish, stinky and very slippery. Looking from closer I could see that there was something behind the brownish paste… I scratched the paste, and realized it was coming off easily and leaving a visible image on the film … This strange brownish emulsion paste was covering the image, while it should have been dissolved during the process. I scratched and scratched and scratched (wearing latex gloves), hung the film and waited for it to dry (which took twice as long as usual).

The results were quite crazy, and I remember thinking ‘Ho! I made some novakmisi shots!’ : )
Gallery HPro2 (Holga WPC):

I tortured this film as much as I could, trying to re-obtain the same results, but with no success…
With a HPro3 process, things were pale and brownish.

And with a normal E6 process things were pale blue-pinkish.

So I still don’t see in what this is a ‘safety film’. Maybe it was back in the 80s. Anyway, I’m enjoying this old stinky film. If you have the occasion, try it, it’s fun. But maybe not for wedding pictures : )

BTW, don't try less than 1+9 in C-41. I got another roll in the same tank of 1+20 and the results were too thin for the minilab scanner to detect the frame edges and scan the film.

Wow, that's amazing. At least you got SOMETHING, because I got NOTHING from the two rolls of Ektachrome X (exp. 1977) that I tried. Intended originally for the poisonous E-4 process, soaking it in standard C-41 peeled off the emulsion, and processing it in diluted C-41 (1+20) at room temp rendered NOTHING on the film.....

@adash Ho thanks a lot for all the feedback, much appreciated ! I got blank rolls too with Ektachrome X... And it was as stinky as the EHB : )
