One of the more salubrious places to be seen feeding the pigeons in South London is Dulwich Park. A wonderful park to visit and join the ‘yummy mummies’ in clearing out your old bread or your very best wholemeal and share it with the birds!
Dulwich Park covers 29 hectares and is packed with historic features and amenities as you would imagine from a park created in the 1890s and visited by Queen Mary. It has some important sculptures and the Rhododendrons have amazing blooms in May, you are now able to walk around and across it’s pond come boating lake, where you will be able to delight in feeding those pigeons, geese, and in fact even the rats!
During the winter the water often freezes and you can see the bread sitting on top of the ice waiting to be devoured by the first bird brave enough to venture out onto the thin crust!
Once you have finished feeding the wildlife you’ll find there is so much more to do and if you are energetic, then you should hire a “London Recumbent”, sit back on a selection of the weirdest bikes going and cycle around the vast grounds. As you cycle around on the traffic-free roads and often next to horses cantering on their own sandy path you will pass the playground, The Pavilion Café, where I recently had an exhibition and which is always rammed with park users looking for a hot drink, cupcake or ice cream, the food there is also good.
Needing to work off that snack?! There are tennis courts or the bowling green. I you need a bit more culture then just across College Road is The Dulwich Picture Gallery.
The main entrance is in College Road SE21, other gates are in Dulwich Common and Court Lane Dulwich Village SE21
The Nearest Rail is west Dulwich or North Dulwich
Busses The P4 or P13
Parking is available in the park near the entrance and also in a specified parking area to the left.
