Analog Soundtrack of my Life – Iron Maiden

1986. I was six years old and listening to all the eighties hits: Tina Turner, Tears for Fears, Michael Jackson, Wham, Duran Duran, Eurythmics, Bryan Adams, The Cure, Scorpions, UB40, David Bowie…I remember listening to the latest hit! “The final countdown” by Europe! Then, one day, my brother came home with a record, “Somewhere in Time” by Iron Maiden. My life was about to change.

- What’s that sound?
- Iron Maiden – answered my brother.
- Ok…Iron Maiden…Iron Maiden…Iron Maiden…
Next day, (still singing “it’s the final countdown!!”) I approached my brother and asked him:
- What’s the name of that band?
- Iron Maiden.
- That’s it! Iron Maiden!

Every day, before dinner time, we listened to Iron Maiden. And this ritual kept on going for years. We knew all the songs, all the details, Steve Harris’s bass guitar leading the songs, Bruce’s voice, the magical guitar duo, Adrian and Dave, and Nicko’s perfection on drums. I was also in love with the album cover. Eddie (Maiden’s mascot) can be like a super hero for a six year old child! He was for me!

By the time I entered the 3rd grade, I already knew all the tunes of the “Somewhere in Time” album, and had started to listen to all the previous albums: “Live After Death”, “Powerslave”,”Piece of Mind”, “The Number of the Beast”, “Killers” and ”Iron Maiden”. And later, “Seventh Son of a Seventh Son”, “No Prayer for the Dying” and most popular “Fear of the Dark”.

This was “my” band! This is “my” They taught me how to sing, to play the guitar, gave me some history lessons, English language lessons, stimulated my imagination. But most of all, joy! Uplifting energy!
Some of my favorites songs:

  • Phantom of the Opera
  • Murders in the Rue Morgue
  • Hallowed be thy Name
  • Revelations
  • Flight of Icarus
  • The Rime of the Ancient Mariner
  • Powerslave
  • Caught Somewhere in Time
  • Alexander The Great
  • Moonchild
  • Infinite Dreams
  • Seventh Son of a Seventh Son

By the end of the eighties beginning of the nineties a new technology had arrived to Portugal: the Compact Disk, commonly known as CD. It was expensive; and a CD player was required to play it. So, I kept on going with my vinyl albums, my record player and my cassettes.

So this is how I listened to music back then, an analogue signal recorded on vinyl disc, reproduced on record player!!

Maiden’s albums are not only about music, but also about artwork, meaningful and colorful artwork; this kind of detail is hard to get with a CD.

In 1995 (I was 16 then) I finally got the chance to go to an Iron Maiden show! I had won a backstage pass on a radio contest and fulfilled a dream; meet (for 10 minutes) the musicians that had inspired me so much, get their autographs, ask them questions…I still don’t believe that happened, but it did. Today I’m 31 years old (I’m still a child). I listen to all kinds of music, heavy metal, death metal, doom metal, dance music (I love to dance and party), chilling and listening to jazz or ambient music on the pc or mp3 player…but Iron Maiden records are truly the analogue soundtrack of my life and I’m proud of that !

Up the Irons!!!
