Say hello to Alexandra Ion, a Romania-born Austrian girl who spent one summer as an intern in the Lomography Headquarters in Vienna!

Alexandra is an Austrian girl born in Romania. Her family moved to Austria when she was 4 years old and now she is studying Mediatechnology and design at the University of Applied Sciences in Hagenberg, Upper Austria. Take a look at Alexandra’s great Lomographic adventures with her new amiga, the Lomo LC-A+

REAL NAME Alexandra Ion
CITY Mauthausen
COUNTRY Austria
SCHOOL University of Applied Sciences Hagenberg, Mediatechnology and -design

How long have you been a Lomographer (or are you new to this whole thing)?
Alexandra Ion: Yes, I have to admit that I’ve been a Lomographer for about 2 months. Oh yeah… I’m a Lomographer… sounds great!

Describe the Lomo LC-A+ in five words
AI: It’s a small, handy, easy to use, automatic, little lucky bag.

The strangest, funniest, or hands-down greatest photographic/Lomographic encounter that you have ever had?
AI: It was the first time that we went karaoke singing after the “house warming” party at the office. We went to this little sniffy karaoke bar just a few blocks away from the office. I sang “Foolish Games” from Jewel with Markus, but he didn’t even knew who Jewel was, so you can imagine how well he knew the lyrics. So he just screamed the word into that mic and I couldn’t sing a word anymore. I thought I would pee myself. It was just too funny.

If your photos shown here could have a soundtrack of three songs, what would they be (song title & artist please)?

AI:

  • Down on my knees – Ayo
  • Heartbeat – Nneka
  • The Park – Feist

You recently interned for Lomography’s Vienna office. Tell us a bit about the experience.
AI: It was cool designing things, fun going out, damn great singing karaoke, very nice meeting cool new people.

If you could be anywhere, doing anything, right now, where would it be and what would you do?
AI: Singing in a Jazz Bar in New York :)

We hear through the grapevine that you love to sing karaoke. what’s your favorite karaoke song to sing, and what is it about singing that lights you up?
AI: Yes, I love singing. My favourite songs to sing are many from Alicia Keys like “You don’t know my name” or “How come you don’t call me”. And I have a secret passion for 70ies and 80ies Divas like Thelma Houston, Gloria Gaynor and Aretha Franklin. When I sing it’s like breaking into another world, really feeling the words that you sing. It’s like there’s nobody there anymore and I can just dive into that words.

The one person (living or deceased) who you would most like to photograph?
AI: I think it’s someone I don’t know yet. So let’s see.

Your advice to future Lomo LC-A+ shooters.
AI: Just enjoy it, it will be great.

Doug DuBois on My Last Day at Seventeen

Doug DuBois spent five summers photographing the small neighborhood of Russell Heights in Ireland to capture the essence of coming of age: the inevitable loss of youth and the imminent transition into adulthood. Those four years resulted in his latest book, My Last Day At Seventeen. The book is a visual tale told through a collection of photographs and gives an alternative perspective through a comic narrative around the same subject. This creative combination of two distinct narratives in one book not only works wonderfully in visual terms; it also serves as an essential tool that lets the reader dig deeper into the story being told, making one go back to the book over and over again, yet from a new perspective, every single time.

Valerio Spada went beyond his comfort zone and stepped right into the battlefield with his camera. He went to Naples, Italy, an area populated by the Camorra Mafia but also home to Annalisa Durante who, at the age of 14, was killed by a bullet aimed at a Camorra boss. What happened to her could've happened to any of the girls portrayed in the book Gommorah Girl. This work is about Annalisa. It's about all of the girls that, just like her, seem doomed to an unfair destiny - which, hopefully, may still change.

Camera Collections: theonlydrp's Vintage and Handmade Gear

Some lomographers prefer to hoard as many analog cameras their shelves and budgets can support. Some would rather keep a manageable number that they can regularly shoot with. Community member Joshua Kennedy belongs to the latter group. From 40 cameras, he downsized his collection to 13, as he puts it, "really good ones" that suit his shooting habits and style. In this interview, he breaks down his small yet dependable arsenal of vintage and handmade cameras and how an organized schedule allows him to shoot with each one on a regular basis.
