East Side Gallery

The east side of the famous Berlin Wall became an open air gallery. The paintings are a tribute to peace and freedom. It’s also the largest section of the Berlin Wall that remains. It’s a must see, a landmark and my favourite place in the city of Berlin! You won’t want to miss it!

The East Side Gallery, one of the last remains of the Berlin Wall that’s still at its historical place, is probably the longest gallery in the world. With its length of 1.3km, it curves parallel to the Spree through Berlin and tells with its pictures the story of Berlin and Germany’s history.

The idea is to build an international memorial of freedom—not a static museum but a place of international exchange open to any kind of work and discussion about any kind of walls and borders, not just the Berlin Wall, but also themes such as Korea or Ireland.

Unfortunately, most people don’t know about the East Side Gallery! Before I went to Berlin, I asked my friends if there is any part of the wall that remains and if I could visit but all of them said ‘no’!

Only at this hostel in Berlin, the girl at the front desk told us (me and my travel friends) about the gallery and how to go there. The name of the street is Mühlenstraße but once in Berlin, you may ask someone who lives there how you can get there (by train, for example).

Once there, you can walk about 1.3km while you admire the work of several artists from all over the world who printed their art on the wall. If you don’t want to forget your visit, you may also like to visit some shops near the wall and buy a “souvenir” as a t-shirt, a postcard or a little piece of the wall (!).

The Berlin Wall is one of the most important historical icons of all time (for the saddest reasons) .You can’t go to Berlin and not see the Berlin Wall! Well, you can…but you will miss the best part!

That's what happened to me and my friends! We were there only for one day asking people for the wall and everybody said "no"! And now I know it is full of art, I would love to see it! Thank you!
