Masoch Café (Lviv, Ukraine)

5

This cafe, along with the famous Kriivkа is one of the popular concept cafes in Lviv. It is also in this city where the famous author of “Venus in Furs” was born.

This curious and cheerful restaurant is named after a famous native of Lviv, Leopold von Sacher-Masoch. He was born on Jan 27, 1836 in Lemberg (the name of Lviv at that time) in the family of the chief of police of the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria, Leopold Sacher. Ancestors of his father were the Spanish in the XVI century who settled in Prague and also Bohemian Germans. His mother, Charlotte was the daughter of a professor and then rector of Lviv University, Franz von Masoch. Some researchers said she had Ruthenian (Ukrainian) origins. When Leopold was 12 years old, his family moved to Prague, where the boy learned the German language, which he then used to write his works. Sacher-Masoch was a successful student at the universities of Prague and Graz, where he moved in 1854. Leopold studied law, mathematics and history, and at age 19, became a doctor of law. According to literary encyclopedias of German and Austria in 1860 Leopold von Sacher-Masoch was invited to lecture on history at Lviv University.

This cafe is located in the historic center of Lviv, at Serbskaya street, just a few steps away from the Rynok Square. Before entering the cafe, you’ll find the world’s first monument of this world-famous author in full-length (170 cm). The monument is very funny: put your hands in his pocket, and you might find something.

The has an atmosphere reminiscent of the time and works of the famous writer. The walls are decorated with attributes of a sexual masochistic comfort – erotic photography, leather whips, strings, handcuffs, chains (which visitors can take off and try to act in pretense). The staff are dressed in appropriate leather masochistic outfits. The glass doors are made in the form of a cafe’s keyhole. Visitors might also find the toilets of the cafe quite interesting. Case in point, the women’s toilet where the lower part of the male’s body is posted on the wall while in the men’s room wall you’ll find a female breast. And in both toilets there’s also a set of eyes at the door. They seemed to tell of the fate of a small Masoch, who liked to spy on her aunt.

The names and components of all the food and beverages served here are related to sex and masochism. Examples are a salad called "Bathhouse and a Whip”, a chocolate fondue called “12 Principles of Debauchery “, a hot appetizer with celery called “Do Not Rush the Final”, fruit and cream called “Bridle Passion”. The most popular dishes in “Masoch” though are dishes from bovine testicles and soup with a bull’s penis. As for drinks, the most popular – “Mazohito” and cocktail “Princess”. The bill includes women’s leather shoes as for men, if they wish they can get a parting lash whip. Customers can also buy a bottle of Hrіnіvka (the name is a play on words “hrin” – aka penis), handcuffs, a whip, and other themed souvenirs.
