Dumplings!!! Let's Eat Again...

As a continuation to my previous article about making pasta at home, I have started to make my own dumplings too. Keep reading and you can find out how to make them too.

Last time we had used the pasta machine that my wife bought me for my birthday to make fresh homemade pasta. This time for Christmas my wife bought me a bamboo steamer set, so that we can make our own dumplings at home.

The steamer is made up of there round pieces of bamboo that you place over a wok with boiling water. As the water boils the steam rises through the steamer and cooks the food inside.

But now for the recipe : We started with fresh cooked crabs. We cracked the crabs and painstakingly removed all of the meat from inside and added it to a large bowl.

Then we grated some carrots and ginger, and finely chopped up a green onion, and added these to the bowl with the crab. We also seasoned the mixture with salt and black pepper.

Next, we placed a small spoonful of the mixture in the center of our wonton wrappers (for our first attempt we use square wonton wrappers, which are not ideal, the next time we did this we used round wrappers and they turned out better). You have to wet the edges of the wrapper so that when you fold it in half the edges stick together to form a nice little package to hold your mixture inside. Since this was our first time, we used a fork to pinch the edges of the wrapper together, but we since learned to use our fingers, they come out much better that way.

Now, we placed the sealed wonton wrappers full of our crab mixture into the bamboo steamer. It is recommended to line your steamer with parchment paper or cabbage/lettuce leaves, so that your dumplings don’t stick, so that is what we did.

We added about a 1/2" of water to our wok and set it on the stove at a medium-high temperature, so that the water would boil.

Then we set the steamer in the wok, but made sure to not let it touch the water. After that we put the lid on and now it was up to the steam to do its work. It takes roughly 7-10 minutes for the dumplings to steam.

When they are done steaming carefully take the dumplings out and onto a plate. Now you are ready to eat! You can either buy a sauce to dip them in or make your own (we did both). So enjoy, I hope someone out there gives this a try because it is fun and healthy, and most of all it tastes great!

Bon Appetit!!!
