Rotherhithe: My London Neighborhood

This is my neighborhood! My girlfriend and I arrived in London four months ago, on October 2010. After one week looking for a room, we eventually found one in a very cute house at Rotherhithe in south east London. It looked like a nice neighborhood to live in, with a huge park, a leisure center, a shopping center, and very close to the Underground stations.

The most difficult thing when you arrive in a new city is finding a new home. It’s hard because you don’t know the city, the neighborhood, the rent prices. It wasn’t easy to find a new place to live in but at the end, we finally found our home at Rotherhithe, a neighborhood in Southwark Council, located at south east London. It has a great park, a lot of services, and good connections to the city center.

We rented a bedroom in a cute house in a very nice housing estate that Google Maps located into a park. It isn’t into the park, but it’s very quiet and we have views of the park from our room window. When you arrive at the residential estate, this sign will welcome you:

The residential development is a bit posh and you can see that amazing pink car of our neighbour. There are other incredible cars like a Porsche. You can see the park in the last picture, taken from my window at night with a long exposure of the light pollution.

I said that Google Maps put our house into a park called Southwark Park. We don’t have a direct access to the park from the residential estate, but it’s very close. I love English parks because they were designed to be enjoyed. The Southwark Park has a children’s playground, a gallery, football picht, tennis courts, and a bowling green. Awesome, isn’t it? I really like the park during sunny days, although I also enjoy it when it’s snowing. For example, last November we made our first snowman called Gregorio, he’s a goalkeeper.

The best way to go to my neighborhood is by the Tube, we have the Canada Water Station nearby, and it’s great because with the Jubilee Line we can go to the West End, and with the Overground we can go to East London, the coolest and the most alternative place in London. When you go out from the Canada Water Station you will see the twin towers, with a little park, and this rare building.

And maybe the place where I waste the most time in the neighborhood is the Surrey Quays Shopping Center buying at Tesco. But outside the shopping center there is a little pond with a lot of birds and a huge parking lot where it’s normal to see lost trolleys. And I used to try taking some creative pictures there.
