Lomolutions 2011: Got Any?

A whole new year full of bright horizons and new beginnings is just around the bend. Resolutions to become a better girlfriend, to learn a new language or to finally lose that extra 10lbs will be broken days after the ball drops. I hate resolutions, so I’m not creating any.

Having said that — it is my understanding that setting goals is a much needed part of life. Goals help us climb to the top of arduous mountain tops and become focused on being better at our life’s passions. Goals – cool. Resolutions – blah. Lomolutions – awesome! What exactly is a Lomolution? In my book, it is a happy comprise between a goal and a resolution. It is known fact that many of us here like the 10 Golden Rules of Lomography and many choose not to follow them. Either preference is highly acceptable. A Lomolution is a goal with room for tweaking and flexibility. I’ll provide you with three examples of my own 2011 Lomolutions:

1. Thou shall Title, Tag and Caption ALL Photos:

It has been said that a picture is worth more than 1,000 words. However, there are times when a caption from the photographer is warranted and welcomed. I think of my photos as masterpieces – the good, the bad and the underexposed. Each one has a back story or an inspiring moment that might not be easily revealed in the picture. Seeing the word “Untitled” over my photos doesn’t provide my grand Lomographs any justice. Imagine if Dali hadn’t titled his 1963 masterpiece called “Galacidalacidesoxiribunucleicacid” or if the “Mona Lisa” was left untitled. What might you have called these artworks? The same goes with tagging. Tagging is necessary. It provides all the basic details on location, film and camera. It also helps when entering competitions. I personally hate it when I land on a random home with no meta data. What camera did they use? What film?

2. Thou shall Print my Photos to Canvas:

I love my Lomographic online community, but I have to admit I have another lover. It’s called canvas. Next year I want the entire neighborhood to know of my lomographs and fantasies shot with my Horizon Kompakt or Lubitel 166+. I want to exhibit in coffee shops, restaurants and small galleries. Maybe I am being too ambitious.

3. Thou shall learn to develop on my own:

There have been some awesome articles written here on developing films in your own home. I want that feeling of empowerment. I want more control of my artworks from beginning to end. This Handmade Color Processing article written by stouf caught my eye not long ago so I’ll be giving this method a try in 2011.

There you have it. Those are my top 3 resolutions. What about you? Maybe you want to shoot all B&W, buy up as many cameras as possible or take a trip somewhere exciting with your Spinner 360.

What are your 2011 Lomolutions?

I'm with the title, tag and caption wish. I'm also going to make myself take more images this year - was very slow last year. I must realise everyday has an opportunity for an image!
