Honda Bay is composed of several islets – 12km from Puerto Princesa City in a province called Palawan. In spite of its distance, it’s only a one-hour plane ride away from the capital of the Philippines, Manila. Popularly known for its natural wonders, Palawan is a haven for both beach bunnies and photography enthusiasts, which is why a trip to this city is something that I couldn’t pass on.
Honda Bay is well known for its white sand beaches and beautiful underwater scenery. From Puerto Princesa, the Sta. Lourdes Wharf (jump off point to Honda Bay Islets) is a 25-minute tricycle or jeepney ride. Everyone is required to register at the wharf office and if you want to try out snorkeling you can rent one for P100 ($2) for the whole day. Don’t forget to buy some bread for some fish feeding.
First stop was Pandan Island. We tried to rest at one of the cabanas but the sand and water were enticing us to swim. It was my first time to try snorkeling and Pandan Island’s underwater world didn’t disappoint us. You can already see fishes even just a step from the shoreline and they would swarm around you if you feed them some bread. I didn’t even notice that two hours already passed ’til my friend was already calling us so we can eat.
I wanted to go back but my friends were already tired so we decided to head back to the boat and just go around the other islands. There are more than 10 other islands in Honda Bay like Snake Island (a snake-like sandbar), Lu-li Island (from the words “lulubog-lilitaw” meaning floating and sinking island) & Senorita Island (a breeding site for Lapu-Lapu or grouper) to name a few.
Palawan is the best place to go to if you want to relax and get away from all the stress of city life.
