Wharariki Beach in Golden Bay is really worth a visit if you’re headed to New Zealand. It’s surprisingly not well-known to tourists in spite of the amazing views that you can find there – and adorable little seals! I’ve been there a bunch of times but it never ceases to enchant me.
This place is amazing! I went there five times and just being there always gave me such a great feeling; walking around nearly all alone on such a fascinating beach. Being all alone on this amazing part of the earth is just one of the best things about this beach. I think the reason why it has remained quite “undiscovered” for so long is because nobody really expects to see such a beauty upon reading a sign that says, ‘Wharariki Beach 3km’. Actually, I also missed it the first time that I saw it.
The best thing that we’ve experienced during our time there was when it was low tide and we actually saw little seals playing around in a little pool. They were so interesting and funny! After watching them for a while, we tried to jump into the pool as well, just to swim with them for a bit. Being able to do so, is one of the most beautiful experiences of my life.
After two months I went there again. It was actually a bit colder and quite windy but it was still a fun experience. Eventually, we caught sight of the seals once again although this time around they were a bit shy to play and stayed in the distance. Still, it was awesome to watch them playing in the pool.
I really hope that I’ll get the chance to go there again in a couple of years and I do recommend this place to anyone who’s planning to go to New Zealand – with or without the seals this place is just AMAZING!
