Michigan Central Station (Detroit)

Old buildings intrigue me. I think about the stories that could be told if the walls could talk. Michigan Central Station at 2405 West Vernor in Detroit opened in 1913 and operated as a passenger rail station until the last Amtrak train pulled away from the station on January 6, 1988.

Old buildings intrigue me. I think about the stories that could be told if the walls could talk. Michigan Central Station at 2405 West Vernor in Detroit opened in 1913 and operated as a passenger rail station until the last Amtrak train pulled away from the station on January 6, 1988.

Since that time the building has fallen into a state of great disrepair. The building is adorned with graffiti and it looks like there is not a piece of glass left in the building that is not broken. It is another landmark in Detroit that stands as a constant reminder of the problems and issues facing the city.

The station was designed by the same architects that designed New York City’s Grand Central Station. The price tag was $15 million. In 1984, the building sold for $80,000. There have been several different plans for renovating the building for some sort of use. However, those estimates range from $80 to $300 million to renovate.

I loved exploring that place when I lived in Detroit! My friends made some BASE jumps off the roof as well. Too many memories, thanks for the pics.
