It seems like such a long time ago now, but right at the start of the summer, I got an exciting package through the mail – a roll of film from Hungary! Check out the Doubles With You collaboration between coldkennels and juliagulia!
When Juliagulia was asking if anyone wanted to do doubles with her, I eagerly replied, but as time went on, and I was waiting for the film to arrive, I was getting a bit worried. Julia was sending her roll to me, and I had no idea what to do with it; the only camera I had that could fully control the exposure was a temperamental Smena 8M that occasionally wound on too much, and I was scared I’d accidentally ruin the entire roll. And how would I scan it at the end of it all?
Despite my concerns, I ran around town, shooting things I thought would be an interesting cultural mix with Budapest, finished the roll, and ran into the lab. Luckily, the best lab tech was in, so he understood that he had to take extra care with this one!
When I went to pick it up, he showed me the negs – all rolled up. There wasn’t a split anywhere; every shot overlapped the next one in a chaotic muddle. Back home, I sat with some scissors, the scanner, and my email client, asking Julia what she wanted me to do. Eventually, I just went for it, and took what I thought were the best sections – resulting in images with Horizon panorama proportions.
This was months ago now. Soon, I’ll get myself into gear and shoot another roll, so we can do this all over again – and now I’ve fixed my Smena, I won’t be anything like as worried about the whole thing!
