Wigginton Tournament

Every year the eleven a side girls football team that my daughter plays for – Darlington Spraire Lasses u16s, goes to compete in several tournaments that begin once the league season has finished. Tournaments are often a way for clubs to raise finances and widen their profile and builds relationships that can cross into league tie ups.

Tournaments are often a way for clubs to raise finances and widen their profile and builds relationships that can cross into league tie ups.
One such tournament is the Wigginton Tournament. The tournament is split over two days, with the Saturday and some of Sunday given over to the boys games and Sunday to the girls.

Wigginton is a small village near York in North Yorkshire, UK and the huge influx of people and cars seems to be handled very well by the organising team – Wigginton Grasshoppers. Generally we enter two teams of six a side, with lost of argument about who wants to be DSL United and DSL City (or even Hawks and Kestrels!!). Players get to play in positions that they do not normally play in, so strikers get to be in goal and vice versa. Some years we do very well and have made it to the final/ or semi final stage and some years we have not made it through the knock out stages. Some years we have had fantastic sunny weather where everyone gets burnt to a crisp however last year (2006) we had rain and rain and more rain and everyone got thoroughly soaked. It is a great atmosphere and as we get to play teams from outside our league area, we are always assured of some tough unknown opponents.
