Along the lines of ‘our love will be forever’, couples are attaching their locks to the Hohenzollern Bridge in Cologne, Germany. The Hohenzollernbrücke (Hohenzollern bridge) is right past the Cologne train station and the Cathedral (Kölner Dom) and became a place of pilgrimage for lovers.
At the beginning there were only a few, but by now there are several hundreds of little padlocks attached to the 100 year old bridge. The so called ‘love-locks’ (Liebesschlösser) are a symbol of eternal love. Often times names, initials or dates are engraved on the padlocks, some even have little sayings on them.
The matching keys are thrown into the Rhine river by the couples. Not only is it a nice custom, but it also looks really intriguing along with the great view of the Cathedral and the Rhine.
By the way: This custom is modeled after the Milvian Bridge in Rome, Italy.
