Os vulcões e as suas cinzas são mundialmente conhecidos como perigosos e muitas vezes mortais para toda a vida em geral, mas pouco se sabe sobre a sua capacidade de proteger a vida de uma forma que apenas algumas pessoas conhecem.
Na ilha de Lanzarote, a cinza vulcânica é usada na plantação de vinha, numa região conhecida como “La Geria”. As vinhas são plantadas em buracos profundos no chão, que por sua vez servem de barreira natural para proteger as vinhas dos ventos fortes que fustigam a ilha. Depois cobrem o chão com “Picon”, uma pedra seca de cinza vulcânica, que protege o solo fértil da evaporação da humidade, impedindo que escape e permitindo que a planta se enraíze melhor no solo fértil, e não perder nutrientes devido as altas temperaturas e luz solar direta.
É verdadeiramente espectacular passear por estes campos que parecem nascidos da imaginação de Tim Burton, admirando as paisagens vulcânicas desoladas, e o efeito magico das vinhas, com os seus muitos buracos espalhados pela região…
