Matmata - Where Luke Skywalker Lives

3

Ever wonder on which planet does Luke Skywalker’s home located? Thanks for the Berber who dug the pit thousands years ago, it’s now where the Skywalker lives and where the Star Wars spirit saturated. If you are a big fan of Star Wars, go to Tunisia and visit Matmata.

When I was a kid and saw Star Wars, I really believed that their house is on the planet Tatooine. I wonder if anyone had the same thought. I never thought that Luke Skywalker’s home can be this close to us, easily reach within few hours flight, instead of countless lightyears.

Matmata is a mountain town located in Tunisia. To avoid attack from the invaders, the local people dug large pit underground as their shelter. Most importantly, archaeologists believed that Matmata probably has the best reserved troglodyte architecture in the world.

The interior of Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru’s house was actually the interior of a hotel. Hotel Sidi Driss is the famous filming location of the movie Star Wars, also known as Star Wars Hotel. Even after 20 years, the same decorations and layouts are still there in the house. The only different thing is that, in the hotel, you can only find tourists there eating their lunch, instead of Luke Skywalker.

Now, take your sword and leave for Matmata.
