María Caparrós Martínez, a talented photographer from Valencia and dear LomoAmiga, tested our new LomoChrome Classicolor ISO 200 and came back with a warm series of portraits of her friend Julia, captured through her delicate and personal gaze. Welcome back, María! What have you been up to lately, inside or outside the world of photography?

This past year has been quite introspective. I had to take a break for health reasons and focus on my personal projects. So I’m currently working on a photobook and my first solo exhibition.

Tell us about the day you spent shooting with the new LomoChrome Classicolor ISO 200. Where did you take it, and what subjects caught your eye?

I met up with my friend Julia to take some portraits, and we had a lovely afternoon. It was a beautiful day in Valencia, and I always feel very comfortable photographing people close to me. We started at home and then went outside looking for a green area.

What were your first impressions when you saw the results? How would you describe the mood this film conveys?

It’s a warm film, yet soft and low in contrast. I think it has a nostalgic touch that transports you to another time.

What stood out the most about how Classicolor renders color, contrast, or grain?

I usually overexpose by two stops, and the exposure tends to come out balanced. With this film, the whites and highlights were at their limit but not blown out, there’s still detail when you zoom in. With diffused light, the grain is softer, and in backlit situations, it becomes more pronounced yet still maintains detail throughout the image.

At what time of day or under what kind of light did you feel this film showed its full potential?

I think the best tones come with diffused light. The colors look more balanced, and the grain is softer, as seen in the photos with the white background. I shot them early in the afternoon, but the light came in gently. It was more difficult to control under direct sunlight.

If this photo series had a soundtrack, what song would you choose to reflect its spirit?

Any song by Agnes Obel.

In what kind of projects or situations do you imagine yourself reaching for this film again?

I’d like to try it again later in the autumn to see how it handles those tones. I have a feeling it’ll look great!

What tips would you share with other photographers who are excited to try the LomoChrome Classicolor for the first time?

Meter carefully for the highlights and don’t be afraid to try different lighting situations. It’s a versatile film that delivers very different results depending on the light, which I find really fun. It’s a film that will definitely surprise you.
