SweetSmile Captures the Vibrant Streets of Chiang Mai with LomoChrome Classicolor ISO 200
1 4Chiang Mai’s colors shine bright in these portraits and street scenes shot on the LomoChrome Classicolor 35 mm ISO 200 by Thai photographer Jaturapat Prakhamsai, also known as SweetSmile. We spoke with him about his first impressions of the fresh film stock and his strolls through the iconic Warorot Market, chasing sunlight during the rainy season. Let's take a look at his photos and find out what he has to say!
Hi, SweetSmile. Could you tell us a little about yourself and what usually inspires you to pick up a camera?
Hello! I’m a dentist, and at the same time I also work as a photographer. Photography for me is like taking a break – a way to relax and recharge my inspiration for my daily work. Shooting film allows me to slow down, to carefully observe, think, and compose each frame before pressing the shutter. There’s also the thrill of not knowing exactly how it will turn out until I develop the roll, which makes the whole process even more exciting.
Where did you shoot the LomoChrome Classicolor ISO 200 film and what did you plan for the session?
For this roll, I wanted bright sunlight. But since it’s the rainy season, I chose to shoot in the morning instead, when the light is usually soft and the rain hasn’t come yet. The location was Warorot Market (Kad Luang) in Chiang Mai. The colorful old buildings and the lively atmosphere of the market matched perfectly with this film stock, and I knew the contrast would come out beautifully.
What was your first impression when you saw the results?
I was impressed by the tones right away. The photos came out warm, classic, and didn’t need much editing at all. This film transformed ordinary everyday scenes in Chiang Mai into something special – almost like stepping into a nostalgic old movie.
What details did you enjoy the most about this film?
What I loved the most was the contrast of the colors, especially the orange and blue tones. On a sunny day with a clear sky, the colors come out vibrant, warm, and full of life. I also really enjoyed the grain – it feels unmistakably “film-like.” Compared to medium format (120) film that I usually shoot, which is often so smooth it can look almost digital, the LomoChrome Classicolor ISO 200 has a unique grain that adds character.
Which photo stood out the most to you, and why?
The most striking photo for me is the one of the model running across the red crosswalk in front of Warorot Market. It perfectly captured the essence of Chiang Mai – the iconic red songthaew (local trucks), the historic market building, and a scene that instantly tells you where you are. It’s both classic and alive at the same time.
When did the film truly come to life for you?
The moment I saw the scans, it felt like stepping back in time to the exact moment I pressed the shutter. It’s not just a photograph – it’s like a doorway that brings you back to the atmosphere, the feelings, and the memory of that day.
If this photo set had a soundtrack, what song would you choose?
I’d choose Peach Eyes by Wave to Earth. The lyrics and the dreamy mood of the song – with its imagery of peach-colored eyes and blue skies – feel soft, warm, and romantic. It pairs beautifully with the tones of this film roll.
Would you like to shoot this film again, and if so, in what kind of project?
Definitely. I’d love to try it for a fashion-inspired shoot with a cool, edgy vibe, because the contrast of this film could really bring something fresh and bold to the images. I’d also like to use it for a stylish pre-wedding session, since its tones can make the photos look unique, timeless, and different from other film stocks.
Do you have any tips for someone trying out this film for the first time?
Don’t overthink it. Just go out on a sunny day and let the film lead the way. The colors will surprise you in the best way, and you’ll end up with photos full of charm and character that you couldn’t have planned for.
