In the Frame: Colors of Horror
1In our series In the Frame, we’re encouraging our Community members to get creative with monthly photography prompts we’re all familiar with. Let's see these prompts in a new light, explore new possibilities and create new experiences in film photography!
For the fifth edition of our series, we're calling on our Community members to capture horror in color (or not). Let's take inspiration from horror movies or real life itself, and create hauntingly beautiful photos that fit this season.
When we think about the scenes that made certain horror flicks iconic, we think about colors used to create an atmosphere and drive the story forward. Red, specifically, comes to mind whether it's through blood-soaked scenes or rooms lit in its intensity. Alternatively, imagine a contrast of happy colors such as yellow, against a chilling moment where something sinister occurs.
Or, perhaps, you associate it with no color at all. After all, many trailblazing horror movies were in black-and-white, such as Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror (1922), Night of the Living Dead (1968), and Psycho (1960), released when black-and-white movies were the norm or the better option for filmmakers to save on production costs.
There are many ways to capture this season. In this edition of our series, we dare our Community members to go beyond the typical and dive deep into what else horror could be through film photography. What stories, whether personal or not, could we use to anchor our photos on? Does "horror" simply mean gore, or can we also explore intriguing questions or anomalies through hues and shades? These are some of the questions we'd like for you to explore!
Through this series, we'd also like to shine the spotlight on our Community members who continue to explore eeriness on film. Whether it's liminal spaces, curious objects, or obscure instances gone in the blink of an eye or the click of the shutter, we're enticed with the way you've captured the unspoken.
