PPP Explores Artistic Possibilities of the LomoChrome Film Series in Hong Kong

Sometimes, by changing the colors, the familiar city can feel strangely new again. Hong Kong-based photographer PPP hopes to create images that differ slightly from what the eye sees through photography. Therefore, we invited her to use the LomoChrome film series, including 2021 LomoChrome Purple Pétillant 35 mm ISO 100–400, 2021 LomoChrome Turquoise 35 mm ISO 100–400, and 2021 LomoChrome Metropolis 35 mm ISO 100–400. Let's take a look at how PPP captured Hong Kong with these three rolls of film!

Hello PPP! Welcome to Lomography Magazine! Can you introduce yourself?

My friends call me PPP, and my main job is as a UX/UI designer.

What sparked your interest in photography?

I first got into photography during my university years, as I needed to complete assignments. I started learning about aperture and shutter speed to produce the ideal photos. After starting work, a foreign colleague was leaving Hong Kong and gave away some of his old belongings. I received a very old Diana F+ camera. Although its shutter had issues and it leaked light severely, this actually ignited my passion for film photography. I began to enjoy exploring the uncertainties that film photography brings, eagerly anticipating the surprises in the photos after development.

What is your shooting style, and what do you hope to express through photography?

I enjoy capturing the details of life and those fleeting moments. Sometimes, I aim to create images that differ slightly from what the eye sees.

Was there a specific theme for this shoot? What was your source of inspiration?

There was no specific theme this time. I took my Contax TVS and Nikon FE to explore the bustling streets of Hong Kong.

Did anything interesting happen during this shoot?

This was my first time using the LomoChrome series. I initially wanted to research the concept of color changes before shooting, but in the end, I followed Lomography's 10 Golden Rules : Don’t think, just shoot!

Please share your experiences using different films!

Each type of film has its unique colors and personality. While it can be tempting to try different films as a beginner, repeatedly using the same film to practice can help you better understand its characteristics, such as color shifts and how it performs in daylight versus artificial light. Additionally, the level of contrast is also important, as it helps you understand how much shadow detail you might lose during the shooting process. Through these experiences, you can choose the right film with more confidence.

What are your plans for the future? Are there any other styles you want to try?

I hope to capture those once-in-a-lifetime scenes during my travels, such as the aurora, starry skies, flower fields, and glaciers.
