Community Gallery: Bodies of Water
1 7There’s something inherently cinematic about the calmness of a quiet lake, the rhythmic crash of ocean waves, or the steady flow of waterfalls. Being in the presence of nature in these magnificent forms, it’s almost instinctive to reach for a camera and preserve its beauty in a frame.
It’s easy to pull out your phone on a trip and take a quick shot of the sea for memory’s sake, but these photos we’ve gathered from our Community members reveal nature at its most striking. From simple lake vacation shots to dreamlike beach scenes using the Lomography LomoChrome Turquoise, we're exploring the unique ways that people have captured water. In this gallery, we’re showing not just its beauty, but its beauty when captured intentionally through film.
Nature is ever-changing — light dims and brightens with the clouds, wind changes directions, and even still water in a pond reacts to subtle movements. Water, for instance, is fluid and never truly in our control. Like the process of film, it resists perfection and predictability, but it also rewards patience and experimentation. This is especially true in @benedettafalugi’s stunning double exposure, where water appears to cascade from the top of the image, blending seamlessly with the subjects below.
When photographing water, it can be thrilling to play with light, color, texture, and movement as they come together uniquely to transform ordinary scenes into something almost otherworldly. In @raintoday’s underwater portrait, light glows underwater and accentuates the subject’s vibrant red hair and flowing ruffled dress. Perhaps you’d like to walk into a reversed world in @kyope's aquarium image, where sea creatures drift above you, and you’re covered by the deep blue hues of the ocean.
Even with the absence of color, photographs can capture the breathtaking beauty of water. Freeze waterfalls through long exposures like in @bkspicture’s image, or emphasize the silky smoothness of its surface, as @chriskeane did.
Photographing bodies of water can be a rewarding practice as there are countless ways to see and interpret them through your viewfinder. It’s also a reminder that preserving the beauty of nature through images goes hand in hand with caring for and protecting the natural environment that we’re fortunate to live in.
