Vietnamese Film Enthusiast Daisy: Embracing Life's Gentle Moments with Film Photography

Daisy, a Vietnamese film enthusiast, discovered her love for analogue photography with an old film camera. Recently she used the LomoChrome Purple, LomoChrome Metropolis and LomoChrome Turquoise films to document scenes around Saigon, where she finds beauty in the surreal qualities they produce. She encourages others to explore various films to discover their own unique artistic expressions.

Hello Daisy! Welcome to Lomography Magazine. Can you introduce yourself and tell us what you do?

Hi, this is Daisy from Vietnam. My major work is as an Embryologist, the work to bring smile to couples who seeking the result of their love. In my hospital, we often joke that we are performing ART (Assisted Reproductive Technology) and it just so happens that film photography is my only and greatest artistic interest.

Can you tell us how you started your analogue journey?

Actually, I started my photography journey with a digital camera, but somewhere I was still felt like something was missing that I couldn't define. One day, a friend gave me his old Minolta Sweet II and told me to "Try it!" Since then, I started to love taking photos with film cameras because I found poetry and nostalgia in each picture.

What are you working on at the moment?

Before, now and in the future, I am just enjoying capturing the gentle moments of my daily life. Also, I am planning to try my hand at different types of films to add more colors to my own life.

How would you describe your style of photography?

I call it “after work and emotional style”. Every time I finish my daily work, I go around Sai Gon to find peaceful corners to release my emotion and soul.

What kind of gear do you mostly use?

My one and only Minolta Sweet II.

Where did you go this time?

For LomoChrome Purple, I went to Saigon zoo to take pictures of the scenery and activities of the animals there. It is the deep sadness of the color that covers all objects, it makes me feel that something is ending but not quite ending, everything in the frame seems to be standing in front of its boundary. As for LomoChrome Turquoise, the surreal feeling does not exist in emotion but in the sense of space, I really feel like it is the same scene but we are standing on another planet, another color tone, another humanity within the things that are inherently normal.

Honestly, this is the first time I have come into contact with LomoChrome Purple and Turquoise film, so, I am really a bit unfamiliar and surprised. What I feel impressed with in general about these two types of film is the surreal feeling of the pictures.

As for LomoChrome Metropolis, my friends and I went around Saigon cafes on Christmas to capture the most beautiful moments of the year. The color produced by this film is my favorite color and it seems that this is on-trend in Vietnam at the moment. The color that makes everything nostalgic and gentle, whether you are happy or desperate, everything is neutralized in the frame, the normal things that a person has to go through in life and are kept in the moment of pressing the shutter.

What is your favorite photo from this series and why ?

These are my favorite photos taken with the LomoChrome Metropolis roll, a joyful moment between me and my friends on Christmas in Saigon. LomoChrome Metropolis transforms the familiar scenes of Christmas into something extraordinary. The muted colors and subtle grain create a nostalgic and enchanting atmosphere, reminiscent of vintage photographs. The film's unique color palette, with its subdued greens and blues, adds a touch of mystery and intrigue to the festive imagery. LomoChrome Metropolis offers a unique and unforgettable way to document the magic of Christmas!

What do you think about the photography trend in Vietnam?

In short, it can probably be described as “healing,” “gentle,” and “simple.” Most people I know like soft, retro colors, and the themes are usually simple moments in their daily lives.

Anything you’d like to share with the Lomography community ?

As an amateur like me, it's hard to say too much about technical expertise, but as a hobby, I'm really amazed by the films that Lomography has created, which can be summed up in two words: impressive and breakthrough. I recommend you should try different types of film to find the color of your own soul. I'm on the way and so are you!
