Hello Elliot, please tell us a bit about yourself.

Hi there, I’m from a village outside of Dover on the sunny Kent coast. I’m a teacher and also freelance as a photographer and illustrator.

Photography and travel go hand-in-hand but what made you want to shoot your trip on film?

For sure, I love shooting film and visiting one of the best cities in the world I wanted to make it extra special. Shooting film, I get to enjoy my trip more because I just take the one photo and move on.

You can’t see what you’ve done and you can regret your bad shots later. And with film, you have the fun of reliving the moments and scenes all over again when your prints, negatives and scans arrive sometime after the trip.

What did you choose to shoot on your trip to Amsterdam, and what were your favorite parts of the city?

Mostly buildings, Amsterdam has such beautiful and varied architecture. I really enjoyed all of it, there’s always something exciting or fun to do or see in Amsterdam. I’d never been to the Nemo Science Museum before, which was good fun with loads of interesting modern buildings around nearby to shoot. The Leidseplein area was good fun with the buildings having that classic Amsterdam look.

How did you find the LomoChrome '92 film results?

Really unique! There are photos from that roll that are some of my favourites. The weather was quite moody for most of the trip and the film dealt with it well. The grain made the darker skies look alive, almost as if they were moving. I liked how it resolved the colour yellow, which was useful because my three-year-old daughter wanted to visit every cheese and rubber duck shop in Amsterdam. I left my black diffusion filter on for the whole roll so I’d like to see what LomoChrome Color '92 film is like without it next time and shoot it on a sunnier day.

What tips would you give for someone wanting to shoot with film on a holiday or trip away?

Take the picture! You might never be there again and you’ll regret it if you don’t and no, that person standing near that landmark will never do that same awesome thing again so just go for it and hit the shutter button. Bring spare batteries, film camera batteries are not an easy thing to find anywhere, ever. Bring more film, you won’t regret shooting too much but you’ll be sad if you can’t shoot at all. Enjoy the holiday most of all and if you can make a game out of it for everyone to spot a particular subject to shoot it can make your photo-taking side quest more fun for your partner/family too.

Bonus tip for parents of toddlers: Consider a shoulder camera strap or wrist strap rather than an around-the-neck one. My camera was hanging at a height on my body that when I went to pick up my daughter running towards me, she head-butted the lens.
