1 3 Share TweetScotland-based illustrator and printmaker Lauren Morsley creates bold illustrations that are bursting with a playful sense of joy. Her subject matter of choice includes exotic animals such as fish, frogs, alligators and birds; all depicted with a hint of charm and a lot of color. In this interview Laura shares her newly customised La Sardina DIY camera and talked to us about the inspiration behind her work.

Hello Lauren, please tell us a bit about yourself?
Hello, my name is Lauren Morsley and I'm an illustrator, printmaker and muralist from Scotland. I grew up in quite a creative household and I was always encouraged to draw and problem solve through creativity.
I then went onto study Illustration at DJCAD in Dundee and since graduating in 2018, I have built up my portfolio and been self employed for about four years now. Alongside creating commissioned designs for various clients, I also design and sell my own prints and illustrated products, full of wiggly armed and long legged characters. When I am not working I love to cook, bake, travel and be outdoors.
How would you describe your style as an illustrator and where did this style come from?
My work specializes in bold and colorful designs which create other worlds to explore. I am often inspired by intriguing stories, places, and people. Growing up amidst the stunning landscapes of Scotland, the natural world has profoundly influenced my art. Over time, I have refined my style, and I now feel it truly represents my vision and identity.
What inspired this camera design and how did you approach this?
With the New Year upon us and the anticipation of spring, I wanted to create a design featuring the adorable creatures you might spot in your local park or by a tranquil pond. My inspiration stems from my childhood fascination with nature. Growing up, I had a small kids film camera and always used it to capture the animals and plants around me. This design is a ode to those memories, and I hope it inspires the winner to take the camera on their own outdoor adventures.
What are your plans for 2025?
This year, I’m excited to dive into more fun and interesting projects for clients. I would really love to work on some more mural and packaging projects. There are also some personal projects that I am hoping to start. One of them being writing and illustrating a children's book idea I've been thinking about for a while and also hopefully hosting my first solo exhibition. In my personal life, myself and my partner are looking forward to finishing our flat renovation and finally moving into it. This has been a big goal of ours and it's taken most of 2024 to do, but it's exciting to see the hard work finally paying off. I'll need to make sure to take some interior shots with our Lomography camera.
