Community Gallery: Flowers on Film

1

Flowers have long been symbolic to humans as a sign of love and affection. You give them on Valentine's Day to confess a deep admiration. You buy them on special occasions to celebrate a milestone — when a mother gives birth, when a child graduates, or when a couple marks another year in love. Even when we grieve, we offer flowers to the ones who've passed as a way of honoring their life.

In this community gallery, we’re building a garden of memories with photos of flowers that our community members have captured on film. Some were uploaded in recent years while some are dated over a decade ago — proof that nothing withers in photos!

The history of giving flowers can be traced back to religious ceremonies in ancient times. In the course of time, people picked up the language of flowers and used them as gifts to express feelings that words can’t convey. To this day, the tradition lives and has even evolved with the act of giving artificial flowers as well.

Although their beauty is fleeting, receiving real flowers still elicits an incomparable sense of connection that one can’t get from an artificial. From the giver’s sweet initiative to have specific flowers arranged to the receiver’s efforts in keeping those flowers alive during the next few days. Yes, it’s a slower process as opposed to just going online and ordering a ready-made bouquet, but it’s somewhat more intimate and binding.

In the same way, there's also comfort to be found in the slow process of documenting life on film. Just as flowers require patience and attention from arrangement to preservation, shooting on film allows the chance to savor raw and unfiltered moments with loved ones.

Here’s a reminder just in time for Valentine’s Day: grab a bouquet and take a camera too. Those flowers may fade away, but the memories tied to them will live forever when you click that shutter!

Nice photos. But aren't flowers more beautiful in nature or in a garden?
