Welcome to Lomography Magazine! Please tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Eulana Alicia George, a proud Guyanese-born individual who has been calling the United Kingdom home for the past 21 years. As the second of three children, I embrace my role as the middle child, often dubbed the "strangest" of the trio, a title I wear with a sense of humor. I prefer to think of myself as an Art Director as I can’t help myself but become completely involved with the people I work with every time I pick up my camera. I tend to become so involved that I even lose sense of time as I strive to immerse my models in the creative process. I engage with them as if we're shooting a movie scene, encouraging them to fully inhabit the moment as if it were real life. This approach allows us to collaborate in creating something truly beautiful and unique, capturing the essence of our shared experience.

Growing up in a third world country, access to photography was limited, and I only recall having my picture taken during significant educational milestones—such as the first day of nursery, primary, and secondary school. A family friend would visit occasionally with his camera to capture images of me and my siblings, returning months later with beautifully presented photographs that my mother would eagerly show us. This process sparked my curiosity about photography and my desire to be part of it.

Years later, as an adult, I ventured into digital photography and rediscovered my fascination when a friend introduced me to the very same type of camera I remembered from my childhood. He showed me the stunning results of his photos, which retained vibrant colors and accuracy even though the film was over a decade expired. This experience ignited a deep passion for film photography within me. To this day, I remain captivated by the art of shooting with expired and experimental films, seeking to capture genuine moments and the emotions inherent in the stories told through images.

How did you get into shooting film and what's the appeal?

My journey into film photography began when I got a Zenith B camera with a 58mm f/2 lens, which I thoroughly enjoyed using. Since then, I have explored various film formats, including 120, 220, 110, 35mm, Polaroids, and Instax. I also learned to develop my own films with the help and support of that same friend, and I continue to do so to this day. I’ve always been curious about shooting with the LomoChrome Turquoise film stock, but I had never had the chance until now. Recently, I experimented with my friends in a lavender field, which I thought would be a beautiful location for this particular film. I played around with different ISO settings, and a friend suggested that I shoot it at ISO 200. I decided to set my camera to both ISO 150 and 200, as I wanted to capture the stunning sky, the models, and the environment, all while reflecting my original vision.

This was my first time shooting with this particular film in such a way, and it truly sparked my creativity. The vibrant colors, sharp contrasts, and crisp images produced by the LomoChrome Turquoise film render the story I aim to convey. Being lost in nature is oddly beautiful and graceful, providing moments of comfort and peace.

Do you shoot differently when trying out experimental film types?

Shooting with LomoChrome Turquoise film has transformed my creative process, allowing me to slow down and immerse myself in a surreal realm. The colors it produces evoke an ethereal quality, creating a captivating blend of dream and reality that makes you feel fully present. Each frame becomes a canvas where the vibrant hues spark my curiosity and fill me with excitement. This film renders colors in a way that transcends the ordinary, leaving me eager to explore its unique effects and celebrate the artistry of photography.

What's coming up next for you in 2024?

In 2025, my primary focus is to deepen my commitment to my passion for directing and photographing portraits that emulate the essence of painting, all while utilizing film stock to create a unique aesthetic. I aim to explore the ethereal and gentle aspects of humanity, capturing the elegance and beauty of people and everyday objects that often go unnoticed. Each photograph will serve as a reminder to appreciate the subtle wonders that surround us.

I also aspire to collaborate with Lomography, delving into a diverse range of film colors that inspire my creativity. By doing so, I hope to enhance my artistic vision and share my work globally across various platforms. My ultimate goal is not only to showcase my art but also to build a sustainable career from it. To hold myself accountable, I have developed a structured monthly plan that outlines my commitment to shooting film in various contexts. I intend to experiment with rendering colors in ways that evoke emotions and narrate beautiful stories, allowing each image to resonate with viewers on a deeper level. This journey is not just about capturing moments but about discovering and expressing the richness of life through my lens and additionally, to learn something new every time I shoot film in my studio.
