Welcome to Lomography magazine! Please introduce yourself to our readers.
Hello, my name is Raufan. I’m an Indonesian film photographer and digital product designer based in Tokyo, Japan. I primarily shoot with medium or large format film cameras, but I also enjoy using pocket film cameras. I also like to do experiment with darkroom printing. My photography focuses mainly on landscapes and the sea.
What brought you to the world of film photography?
The first time I shot with a film camera was in 2017, which also happened to be my very first camera - a Nikon TW20. My journey into film photography began after discovering the work of Hamada Hideaki-san on Instagram. His images inspired me, and I was drawn into the world of film.
What keeps me shooting film, though, is the slow, intentional process. There are many reasons people choose film, but for me, it’s the slower pace that makes it special. Shooting film encourages you to think deeply about each photo you take. I love that you might not see your results for a week or two, giving you time to reflect on what you’ve captured.
With digital cameras, there’s an immediate reaction—you see the photo right away, and the excitement of the moment can cloud your judgment. But with film, revisiting your shots after some time brings a more open-minded perspective. You can appreciate both the successes and the mistakes, and I find joy in both outcomes.
Film also demands patience before you press the shutter. You ask yourself, “Is this really what I want to shoot? Is this how I want to frame it? Is this subject worth capturing?” That extra thought connects me more deeply to my subject, pushing me to understand it before taking the photo.
This kind of connection and reflection is something I’ve never experienced with a digital camera. And that’s why I love film.
Tell us about your story behind your discovery of Lomography.
I’ve been shooting film since 2017, and over the years, I’ve tried almost every type of film, including Lomography film stocks. I can confidently say that Lomography is one of the most consistent brands, always showing incredible support for the film photography community. I’m truly grateful to have discovered their amazing products during my journey in film photography.
What does Lomoraphy mean to you?
It truly means a lot! As I’ve mentioned, I’m incredibly grateful for Lomography’s presence. In a niche market like film photography, Lomography continues to support us enthusiasts. That’s why I’m committed to supporting them by using their films and cameras.
What kind of photography do you usually do?
The reason I shoot film is deeply tied to its slow process, which I truly value. I primarily use medium and large format film cameras, focusing on landscapes, the sea, and sunrise or sunset scenes. The combination of film’s slower pace and the larger format holds a special meaning for me. It allows me to reflect on myself and my thoughts while capturing each moment.
You also tried the LomoGraflok this time. Could you tell us about the experience?
It was such a fun experience! I made a YouTube video about it, so please check it out! I used my large format film camera, the Intrepid 4x5, to shoot Fuji Instax Wide, and it was an absolute blast. I loved the results so much that I’ve hung all the prints in my room!
Please tell us about your experince using the Lomo LC-Wide and the three LomoChrome films you used.
I also made a video about this on my YouTube! It was an incredible experience, both with the camera and the films I used. This was my first time trying all of them, and to my surprise, I really enjoyed it!
As someone who values consistency in the tones of my photos, I’m usually very particular about choosing film stocks. But this time, I stepped out of my comfort zone to try three films from Lomography, and I loved the results! The colors added such an artistic and unique vibe to my photos.
The camera was amazing too—super versatile! It was also my first time using a 17mm wide lens, and I loved how it gave me a fresh perspective on my photography. My number one favorite photo is the swing in the park, but also all of the photos I took in the harbor is really good!
For you, what's the beauty of film?
The beauty of film lies in how it allows you to embrace and appreciate imperfection, I think.
In your opinion, what makes a good photograph?
Photography is subjective, but to me, a good photograph is one you can truly appreciate. There will always be people who like or dislike your photo, but as long as you value it, that’s what makes it good. It’s about being able to say clearly: this is what I saw.
The best thing about photography is how we can all be using the same camera gear, be in the same location, at exactly the same time and all end up with different photos because we all have different perspectives and observations of the world around us.
