Recently, photographer Rui Li and model Ian Yen took a roll of LomoChrome Color '92 Sun-kissed 120 film to a quiet village, capturing moments that are simple yet full of life. Under the sun, blue skies and fields all came alive with the warm, vibrant tones of the Sun-kissed film.

Rui Li also used the LomoChrome Color ’92 Sun-kissed 35 mm film to capture scenes in the city. Let’s dive into his work and see what he captured!

Hi, Rui Li! Welcome to our online magazine! Could you share the inspiration behind your series, “Schoolkids After School”?

I often shoot in villages in the late afternoon, and sometimes I run into kids who’ve just left school. They’re on their way home, playing as they go along—maybe looking forward to a hot meal or just enjoying the journey with friends and the sights around them. They look so carefree and joyful, and I wanted to capture that.

Did anything interesting happen during the shoot?

As we walked and shot photos, we met a curious grandmother. I decided to take her portrait. She seemed a bit shy, but the moment I raised my camera, she stood up straight and smiled.

Every time I look at this photo I remember how happy that moment was. She put down her farm tools, stood tall, and let me take her portrait, a mix of shyness and curiosity in her expression.

How do you feel about the look of the LomoChrome Color ’92 Sun-kissed film ?

I really like it. I’ve always been drawn to rich, vintage tones, and this film has that exact look. It reminds me of old magazines or vintage movie posters.

What kind of scenes do you think this film works best for?

The colors of this film are rich, and the tones are deep and nostalgic. I’d choose it for shooting on older city streets or in natural, outdoor settings.

When did you first get into photography?

I quit my sales job in 2019, and then I started taking portraits and street photos here and there. By the end of 2020, I realized I could maybe make a living from it, so I began taking on more shoots. I had to take on all kinds of jobs—pets, portraits, event photography, interiors, products—whatever came my way.

Was there a turning point that got you interested in photography?

I’m not sure if it was a turning point, but before I quit my job, I loved taking spontaneous shots of friends and colleagues with my phone. Then, I don’t know why, but I started thinking it would be cool to have a camera. I bought one, and it sat unused for about a year before I really started.

Are there any photographers who’ve influenced you?

So many! I’m self-taught, so every great photographer I come across has been a mentor in some way. I pick up things from each one I admire.

How would you describe your style? How do you keep it consistent across different subjects?

I shoot a range of themes, but if there’s a common thread, it’s probably that I look for a natural, unpolished feel. I stay close to real life and try to share my own perspective on things.

How do you usually prepare and find inspiration before a shoot?

My shoots are pretty simple—minimal prep and no props. But there are a few essentials: knowing the location well, understanding the subject, and letting that guide me. Inspiration usually comes from observing and connecting with the environment.

When did you first start shooting with film?

I first tried film around 2021, borrowing a film camera once or twice. This past summer, I finally got my own automatic film camera.

What do you find special about film compared to digital?

Film feels real to me in a way digital doesn’t. It’s not just the look of the image—it’s the experience of taking the photo that feels so authentic.

Do you have any upcoming projects you’d like to share?

I’d like to do more street photography on film, capturing spontaneous, interesting moments.

Thank you, Rui Li , for sharing your photography with us! On the next sunny day, let’s pick up the LomoChrome Color ’92 Sun-kissed and capture those gentle light and shadow moments together!
