Community Gallery: Life with the Lomo Lubitel 166+
6 14 Share TweetWhat constitutes the perfect daily companion camera? In the Lomography Online Magazine, we've talked with many film shooters who have amassed their arsenal of cameras perfect for every moment. For some, the Lomo Lubitel 166+ is a go-to for days when we would prefer to pack lightly, and take things slow but still take quality photos. In this community gallery, we're sharing a few recent photos from our community members taken with this superb camera.
The Lubitel is often regarded as a perfect daily companion for medium-format shooters, being a flexible and lightweight TLR capable of sharp results. It's also a good introduction to medium format for many beginners, given its easy manual controls.
The Lubitel camera takes its roots in the post-war twin-lens camera manufactured by the LOMO factory in St. Petersburg, Russia. The camera, which was aesthetically similar to another iconic camera released a decade before, the Voigtländer Brillant, sold millions of copies and became a household name in the market.
Several models were released afterward, including the Lubitel 2, the Lubitel 166, the Lubitel 166B, and the Lubitel 166B Universal. In 2008, Lomography released the Lomo Lubitel 166+ which retained the features of the classic TLR camera and added a few, including a 35 mm film conversion mechanism which enables shooting with 35 mm. A standard hotshoe and stop focus mechanism were also added.
Now we still enjoy browsing photos shared by our community members taken with the lightweight TLR camera. From satisfying still life and cool portraits, to cityscapes and pastoral scenes, these photos prove why the camera remains a favorite of many!
