Honor Roll: Potsdam Kino B&W Shots From the Community on 35 mm and 120 Film
9 Share TweetPotsdam Kino B&W 100 is the finer-grained, higher-in-density, contrast-heavy sibling to the Berlin Kino B&W 400. One of our four B&W Kino films, the Potsdam Kino B&W 100 is best known for its ability to bring about a dream-like greyscale quality to your pristine portrait and landscape photographs.
Since its 2019 B&W formula update, Lomography community members have taken the film with them to stadiums, cities, coastal areas, plazas, and airplanes cruising up to 35,000 feet in the air. A good number of these images tell visual stories surrounding the concepts of community, changing seasons, and circularity — as seen in the vignettes of a warm gathering of friends and family in a local park, stills of full-on snow-covered branches, and all the way to rounded windows that serve as portals into new spaces and experiences.
This moody Kino film stock proudly hinges on dark shadows and bright highlights — giving the analogue images sharper depth and texture.
When photographing on a black and white film stock, it’s all about focus and fundamentals: (1) focusing on the interplay of light and contrasts against elements within a frame, and (2) funneling in on the monochromatic tones featured in the range of 12 (120 film format) to 36 exposures (35 mm). So, this holiday season, consider including the Potsdam Kino B&W 100 film stock in your rotation and capture the timeless essence and nostalgia that accompany the festivities.
In this gallery, we’ve curated a selection of 35 mm and 120 film photographs taken in different types of terrains; spotlighting themes and visual motifs that demonstrate the B&W film stock’s strengths within portraits, landscapes, action shots, and more. Many of these photos from our community also encourage us to move beyond a straightforward approach by layering images and incorporating multiple exposures.
