A Boat Trip in Greece with Lorena Gómez and the Babylon Kino ISO 13 Film

Autumn is not really autumn without the nostalgia one feels when looking back at summer photos, especially if the photos are bathed in the melancholy look of black-and-white film. Spanish photographer Lorena Gómez takes us with her on a day on a boat in Greece, experimenting for the first time with a low ISO film, the Bablyon Kino ISO 13, perfect for bright sunny days.

Welcome to our magazine Lorena! Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

Hi! My name is Lorena Gómez. I was born on May 30th, 1998 in Valencia and I've been living here since then. Although this past year I was living in Athens, where I took these pictures. I love photobooks and documentary photography. I'm currently finishing my photography studies in Valencia’s School of Design. And most importantly, I have two kitties, Yoga and Miry.

How and when did you start shooting?

I’ve always been the girl who took a disposable camera to school trips and the one in charge of taking pictures during summer camps. But it was in 2017 when I consciously bought my first film and since then all my photos have been analogue.

Can you tell us about the Colectivo La Breva you are part of?

Of course! The collective was born from the need to create a community and a support network of emerging photographers within the Valencian panorama. The idea of La Breva is to act as a communication tool and create spaces to enjoy photography, both for the members of the collective and for anyone who wants to approach us.

Where did you shoot this beautiful Bablyon Kino ISO 13 film series?

I was living in Athens at the time, and with a bunch of friends I spent one day on an island and I took the opportunity to shoot and create a narrative from the beginning to the ending of the trip, from the first boat to the last one.

Was it your first time using a film with such low ISO? How did you approach this kind of film?

Yes! I was a bit scared, but that was also the reason I chose it! I was very surprised by the grain and the aura of nostalgia it gives to the photographs, as if they were part of a dream.

What camera did you use?

I used a Yashica FX-3 with a 50 mm lens.

What's your favorite part of summer?

Days like the ones you see in the photos. Even more if the plan included sleeping on the beach with a tent and renting a motorcycle to tour the island. I want to go back!
