Lomo'Instant Automat: Disco Ball Special Customization by Hannah Shillito

We got to know the talented British contemporary artist Hannah Shillito in conjunction with her special exhibition organized by Ibiza’s first pop art and photography gallery Agony and Ecstasy. The exhibition featured artworks from her exclusive collaboration with the late legendary rock photographer Mick Rock. In this interview she talks more about her work and presents a special customization she did on our Lomo'Instant Automat camera.

Hello Hannah, welcome! Would you please introduce yourself to our readers?

Hi, I'm Hannah, a multi media artist from the north west of England. I've lived all over the world but I am settled now in Brighton, in the UK.

Please tell us about your customized version of our Lomo'Instant Automat camera. What was your inspiration/concept?

Disco balls were my inspiration, taken from my latest collection which was in collaboration with Mick Rock, David Bowie's photographer and the man who shot the 70s! I placed famous icons shot by Rock onto sparkling disco balls against different pops of color in the backgrounds, so I immediately thought I would turn the camera into a disco ball as well!

Tell us about your relationship with photography, and analogue photography in particular.

My grandad was a photographer and toured with the Beatles and the Rolling Stones and so it's in my blood! My whole family are hugely into photography, some on a professional level and growing up it was like living with the paparazzi! I have done a diploma in photography and presentation myself and always found myself coming back to the thrill of analogue photography, followed by developing it by hand in the darkroom. My grandad never approved of digital cameras and never ever used one!

Your artworks are characterized by strong, bright, vivid colors - a world made of colors! What do you want to convey though your works?

Thank you so much - I want to convey joy and vibrancy and FUN. Life is short, our time is limited and fun is an art form we can forget about sometimes. I want my art to be carefree and remind us all to have a good time - in a world made of colors!

What is the artistic process that leads to the creation of your work?

I sit and play around with images all the time, especially ones of my icons. My favorites are David Bowie and Dolly Parton. I like to get inspired by an icon's aura and energy and go from there, playing with color and always having fun with it.

And your greatest source of inspiration?

My grandad was a huge inspiration when he was with us, my icons who I love, and my little girl. Since having her my creativity went wild.

Was there one work in particular that gave your career a boost?

My best selling pieces have been my YAS QUEEN and SEX featuring Vivienne Westwood. Both depict very strong, very beautiful women, and I think that resonates with a lot of people! Plus they have lipstick graffiti and leopard print all over them which people also seem to love!

And is there one particular project you are most attached to?

I did an exhibition called 100 BRIGHTON WOMEN where I drew 100 women from Brighton where I live and all proceeds went to a domestic abuse charity. We worked with a lot of incredible and brave women and I was proud to draw so many inspiring people and do just a little to support such an important cause.

Please tell us about your fantastic current exhibition at Agony & Ecstasy Gallery and your collaboration with the great late photographer Mick Rock.

This latest collaboration has seen my art go through the roof! I couldn't believe that I got to work with Agony and Ecstasy in Ibiza on their biggest project yet alongside the Concept Hotel group and working with Mick Rock's estate was just a dream come true. I still can't believe it happened; it felt so surreal!

When a company commissions a project from you, I imagine they expect to receive a result that is congruent with your style, that they have seen on your website and social media. Have you ever felt the need to do something completely different?

Yes! Sometimes when I am in the studio, wearing my scruffy painting clothes and no make up - totally different to my social media persona! - I like to just go wild and experiment with abstract; something that I don't think anyone expects of me!

What are your next projects coming up in the future?

I have just been signed by a gallery in Sydney who would like me to do a physical exhibition with them next year or the year after so watch out Australia, here I come!
