Community Gallery: Eerie Film Photos for Halloween

1

Halloween time, and it's apt to celebrate by featuring photos from our talented community members fit for the spooky season. But let's step it up and get inspiration from classic horror and psychological thriller films. These photos seemingly convey mysterious, yet oddly familiar stories.

Maybe it's the way the light shines on a lone figure, the multiple exposure as if to convey a supernatural event, or a barren landscape that must've seen climactic events unfold. Film photography offers endless possibilities for telling eerie stories.

Across countries and cultures, the end of October up until the first few days of November marks a period of celebrations. Whether it's local cultural traditions or simply the modern approach to Halloween, this period no doubt has etched its own special place in our annual rituals.

Some of us commemorate in accordance with our own cultures, such as honoring the dead and celebrating familial and societal ties, while some prefer to spend the day relaxing in a simple way, for example with horror movies that have become a large part of this season.

As film shutterbugs, we've come across or taken photos that remind us of the cult classics we've watched growing up. Old railway tracks, abandoned houses, a dimly-lit corridor, or the almost empty road on a gloomy day – these locations remind us of iconic scenes in movies where something sinister or unsettling occurs.

In film photography, black and white and even color-shifting or expired film stocks especially have the capacity to transport our thoughts into the settings of these movies and recreate a spooky vibe.

But while these images give off the uncanny or unnatural feel similar to horror movies, it's also interesting to know the context and process behind them. Photography can transform realities into something otherworldly, but the process of film photography often times proves more interesting.

Grain, focus, type of film and camera, alternative photographic methods – all of it could make a difference on how we perceive an image based on the final result. What's fascinating about these images shared by our community members is how we can garner different narratives from a film photo, given that in film photography there are instances where we get unexpected results, perhaps a photo more out of focus or grainier than we expected, with a light leak here and there.

All of this adds to the "feel" of a film photo, and often it even can appear like a still scene from an eerie movie. In the end the truth stays with the photographer, and us viewers are free to make up our own interpretations.
