In Depth: The Fun and Rewarding Experience of DIY cameras
9 Share TweetAt Lomography we often talk about the charms of DIY cameras. There's something about building a camera from scratch or customizing it in inventive ways that speaks to just how ingenious us humans can be when we let our whimsy and creativity loose.
In this article, we're delving into some of the reasons why we love DIY cameras so much. We're also sharing images from our community members which stay true to the spirit of DIY.
On its own, we can benefit a lot from DIY projects through feeling a sense of accomplishment and creative expression. DIY in film photography, in addition, allows us to learn more about this craft, which in return strengthens our connection and confidence to it, and even our own connection with the world around us.
Across LomoHomes, we once in a while come across DIY projects such as pinhole cameras using household items, or those using Lomography's accessories resourcefully such as Dave Prochnow's DIY pinhole instant camera with the LomoGraflok 4×5 Instant Back.
In our interview with him, he talked about his connection to film photography which could also be the driving force behind his DIY projects around this format.
I began using film cameras at a very early age and was immediately captivated by the ability of photography to produce an image that represented an abstraction of the world around me. Whether the photograph was color or black and white, or a transparency, with these results I could "see" things that the human eye was incapable of seeing.
DIY-ing a camera can also serve as a way we can re-ignite our interest for film photography, as this shows us the science behind the practice, and ultimately the magic that analogue photography truly holds. Seeing an image appear in a DIY camera is a pretty cool and satisfying experience especially when we've dedicated a large amount of time creating the camera from scratch and getting the specifications right.
Beginners and professionals can learn more about film in this mode and make it not only a crafty but also a meaningful experience.
In true Lomography fashion, some of our own cameras such as the Lomography Konstruktor, Lomomod No. 1 and the La Sardina DIY also encourage every artist in us to customize our own cameras. In the case of the La Sardina DIY, just the act of coming up with ideas and choosing which materials we can use to apply those ideas brings a great sense of satisfaction.
We've seen how our community members have customized their own La Sardina DIY's, using paint, pens, markers, stickers, small trinkets, their own digital art and more to create their own dream version of the camera. Looking at these designs makes us think about how we would customize one ourselves!
Getting our hands into designing and customizing our own cameras is a wonderful activity that yields many benefits. Especially in instances where we sense a feeling of burnout and a lack of inspiration to take images, a DIY camera project can reignite our passion and remind us that there's more we can do with analogue photography than just taking photos!
