Sparkle and Shine: @bydenise Bedazzles the La Sardina DIY 35 mm Film Camera

Hi Denise! What concept and design were you going for when customizing your first La Sardina DIY?

I'm a ‘90s baby and I grew up with the Y2K trends – so lots of rhinestones and crystals! My sisters and I were obsessed with Bratz dolls too, and I thought it would be cool to have a Y2K-inspired 35 mm camera. I’'m all about cute, sparkly things as a trinket-loving girl.

How does the design reflect your personal style and form of expression?

Recently, I’ve been into those decorating TikToks with digicams and old flip phones, so I wanted to create something similar. It was easy to make, I just slapped some stickers on, and it turned out great. (You can never go wrong with crystal deco stickers).

What did you like about the process of customizing a film camera?

I really like how the La Sardina DIY feels like a blank canvas. The sky’s the limit when it comes to conceptualizing the design for it. My favorite part was choosing and deciding where to put the crystals. Since it was my first time customizing the La Sardina, I kept it simple and used deco stickers instead of doing something elaborate. Now I'm feeling more confident and think I could take the camera apart to create a full-on design. I'm thinking of making a colorful, fully rhinestone-covered camera that looks like a disco ball next time.

What do you look forward to photographing with the La Sardina?

I’m more of a homebody, and when I do go out, it’s usually during the day. But since the La Sardina camera has a wide-angle lens and a strong flash, I’d love to take it to a party and snap some nightlife shots for a change!
