Gallery: The Endless Customizations of the Lomography Konstruktor
4 Share TweetIt's been over a decade since the Lomography Konstruktor camera was first released. For those who are up for a challenge and want to unleash your creativity not just in photography but through arts and crafts, this camera is the one for you. A true SLR with a 50 mm F/10 lens and PC sync chord, this DIY experimental camera will make you appreciate the whole photography process as you get to piece it together, customize it to your heart's delight, and use it as your personal shooting companion. Let's take a look at some crazy DIY customizations from Lomographers over the years!
One of the most fun things you can do after assembling your Konstruktor camera is to create how you want the world to see your camera. Just like wearing a graphic tee that showcases your personality, you can do the same with your Konstruktor by designing it any way you want. All the way back in 2014 LomoAmigos DCK and KRIZO slapped on some graffiti-esque graphics, as they had the song Smile by the French hip-hop band Hocus Pocus as a main source of inspiration for their customization. Also being influenced by artists like J Dilla and Basquiat, it's no wonder they took a very street culture approach to their Konstruktor camera.
Another great aspect of the Konstruktor camera is that it gets users even more curious about cameras. Seeing what goes on inside, wanting to tinker with the inner workings, and putting everything together really can get the most curious minds more adamant to explore. Brighton-based design student Bailey Elen-Coghlan was inspired by his first time creating his Konstruktor camera and soon wanted to find a way to create his own version. Using the Konstruktor as a basis for his camera he used found materials to create his own. His idea to create a camera is inspiring and made us think about how interesting it could be to mix and match the Konstruktor's parts and implement other materials to have a more unique experience and look when creating the camera.
Besides visual cosmetics, one of the wildest and most intricate DIY Konstruktor projects came from Naga, who won the ultimate Konstruktor challenge when the camera first came out. Working as a product designer, he decided to add features to the very simple camera, namely a built-in flash, an auto rewinder powered by a motor, a larger aperture, a film window on the backdoor, a hand-built handgrip, a filed-down winding knob, a brighter viewfinder, metal parts for the camera strap, screws for filter and finder hood, and a cable release hole! With inspiration and the internet, anything is possible and you can create your own Konstruktor that's perfect for your needs as a photographer! The Konstruktor is really a camera that has no limits!
