In this edition of Around the World in Analogue, Slovenian shutterbug Aljaž Gošnak (@grainreign) shares photos and stories from a July trip he took with his girlfriend to Croatia, where they visited several locations each with their own unique and scenic views, such as the historical city of Dubrovnik.

Equipped with a few cameras and film stocks, including LomoChrome Turquoise, Aljaž captured the perfect vacation images which spotlighted not just Croatia's beauty, but memorable moments during the couple's first big vacation together. Let's get into it!

Together with my girlfriend, we visited Croatia in the first two weeks of July 2024. Our main destination and our stay for the vacation was a hotel in Tučepi. The hotel is located in Makarska Riviera which is a part of Croatian coast of the Adriatic sea, squeezed under towering mountain Biokovo.

We mostly explored coastal towns and beaches along the riviera and we also visited Dubrovnik.

It was our first proper vacation together and when deciding on a location we both agreed we wanted a more relaxed, laid-back experience. It was an easy choice since Croatia is our neighboring country. We were both amazed by the beautiful beaches and landscapes with iconic pine trees.

Exploring the old town of Dubrovnik was a great experience. It feels like entering a medieval time capsule with its architecture and museums.

Croatia thrives on tourism and the locals are very welcoming. It is a perfect mix for a vacation since it offers quiet moments on the beach and wild parties in the night time. It is a place you go when you want to forget all your worries and just enjoy life. Almost every corner of the coast is picturesque.

LomoChrome Turquoise was my choice of film because of its color shifting abilities, creating an otherworldly look which is perfect for capturing photographs which include seas and skies.

I’m absolutely in love with the results. I didn’t know if this was real life or just a fanta-sea (because of the orange sea just like the beverage).

Locals are accustomed to photographers since the coast is a very touristic place. Be mindful of taking pictures in churches or other religious places; it is most likely strictly forbidden.

Bring wide lenses for exploring the towns and a Polarizer and ND filter which can help with very harsh sunlight in summer. A smaller point-and-shoot camera is a must for capturing valuable moments!
