Making a Moment: Marek Majewski’s Lith Print of a Dream

In our article series, Making a Moment, we’re asking photographers to share one of their favorite photos that they’ve taken. We want to know the story behind the final image and everything that went into making it.

This time we’re speaking to Marek Majewski (@marek_), a Lomographer based in Paris, with a passion for experimental film photography and alternative processes. As someone who grew up in a pre-digital world, Marek’s first photography experiences were with film and he tells us how he vividly remembers the excitement of getting his film developed and printed at his local lab. “I still have that feeling when I develop and print my photos by myself now.”

For this article, Marek shares with us a strangely transcendental lith print he made in a period of profound isolation during the Covid-19 pandemic of 2020. Read Marek’s words below!

Marek: My favorite image is this lith print I made some time ago. I printed it on a very old paper (maybe more than 70 years old), so I had no idea of what the result would be. The paper I used was heavily fogged, but I found the result incredible.

I made other prints of that image, using other paper or other processes, and as you can see each paper or process allows to create another atmosphere. That's what I find great with alternative processes.

I can't really explain why it's my favorite photo, maybe because it looks like a dream, which is a domain I love trying to explore through photography.

This photo was taken during a special time. I went back to France after spending almost two years in Japan. It was during the pandemic, and France had strict confinement measures. This sudden change of environment and the feeling of solitude was strong. This photo could symbolize my dream of escaping this reality. The good point is that I had time to build my own darkroom at home, which is one of the best things I have done in my life.

Many people are curious about the gear used for shots. I don’t really think it’s important, I can't even remember the camera I used to take this photo. Maybe my Holga 120N. I usually use cheap cameras, and cheap film (some rolled Fomapan film). If you can accept imperfections, you can have tons of fun with any camera.
