Capturing the Art of the Athletic Moment: Lia Discusses Her "Sportif.ve.x" Series

Photographer Lia Teixeira Da Silveira delved into the world of amateur and inclusive sports for her series "Sportif.ve.x", captured using our LomoApparat and our Daguerreotype Achromat Art Lens. With a passion for roller derby, she brings a unique perspective to intensity and movement through her images.

This photographic series was created for the third edition of Burning Womxn, an intersectional and inclusive feminist art festival, which will take place on September 21 and 22, 2024, at La Bellevilloise in Paris. In their collaboration with Lia, the festival aims to shine a light on lesser-known sports and anchor its approach in a reflection on intersectional and inclusive feminist creation.

In this interview, Lia shares insights about her journey, her vision of sports photography, and her upcoming projects.

Hello Lia, and welcome to Lomography Magazine! Could you introduce yourself to our readers and tell us about your photography journey?

Hello, and thank you for featuring me in the Lomography Magazine! I'm a language student, and I've been doing photography since I was very young. I started with small disposable cameras that I used to photograph my school trips, and over time, I switched to digital, leaving film behind. But in recent years, especially thanks to my photography studies, I've come back to it, and today I work equally with film and digital.

Can you tell us more about your relationship with sports? What advice would you give to people who want to photograph sports or action scenes in general?

I've been roller skating in a club since I was 11 years old, and when I was 17, I started playing roller derby. I immediately fell in love with this team sport, and I've been doing it for six years now. Roller derby, from adolescence to adulthood, has shaped my relationship with my body, inclusion, community, feminism, and it continues to raise political questions related to sports for me.

I would advise someone who wants to photograph sports scenes to embrace randomness and imperfection. From my point of view, blur is a way to materialize movement and intensity. Film photography in sports has a certain magic to it, in the sense that it reveals moments after the fact that the eye might not have been able to see.

What did you think of the LomoApparat and the Daguerreotype Achromat Art Lens you tried?

I really liked this small film camera, especially the LomoApparat with its lens filters and double exposure feature, which perfectly illustrates this notion of randomness and materialization of movement.

And I also absolutely loved using the Achromat lens on my digital SLR for concert or sports photography. Its bokeh gives a very interesting aspect to the photos, especially in sports photography, where blur once again has its place.

Which is your favorite photo or photos from these series, and why?

I really like these three photographs taken with the LomoApparat for my Sportif.ve.x series because they illustrate all the intensity I wanted to capture.

It was a way for me to give substance to emotions that we mainly experience in sports, when our attention is focused on one point and suddenly nothing else matters.

Do you have any upcoming projects you'd like to share with us?

For now, I can tell you about the "Sportif.ve.x" exhibition (which the previous photos are part of), created with Lomography equipment and as part of the Burning Womxn festival. I focused on amateur, inclusive, and, in some cases, political sports – practices that are not often highlighted in the context of the Olympic Games preparations. Five associations welcomed me during their training sessions: A2CMieux, Comxte Club, Paris Aquatique, Cargo, and the Lutèce Destroyeuses. You can see it at the Buvette de l'Académie du Climat from July to September.
