Free-Spirited and Sun-Kissed: Moriah Ziman Tests the New LomoChrome Color '92 Sun-Kissed Film

Earlier this year, when the weather in New York was just starting to warm up, we asked photographer Moriah Ziman if she'd be interested in testing a very special roll of film: the new Sun-Kissed edition of LomoChrome Color '92. To celebrate the sunshine after defrosting from a long winter, her and artist Ariel Kellogg headed upstate for a fun adventure shooting the mysterious new film.

It's quite the intimidating task to shoot a brand new film stock without really knowing what the results might look like, but this didn't seem to phase Moriah and Ariel. They approached this assignment the Lomo way: letting everything go and allowing themselves to just have fun.

Today we're welcoming Moriah back to the magazine to share her photos and chat about her experience creating them!

Hey Moriah, welcome back to the magazine. Can you catch us up on what you've been working on recently?

Hi! So happy to be back! Lately I have been working on some personal projects and using the warmer weather to get out of the studio and be inspired by the outdoors.

Tell us about the concept for this shoot. What did you decide to photograph?

For this shoot I wanted to capture a sense of freedom and playfulness as the seasons transition into the spring and summer months. It’s that time of year when, after a long winter, the desire to feel the warm sun on your skin is so strong that it pushes you to stay outside, even if it may be a little chilly.

I decided to head up to Kingston, NY to photograph Ariel Kellogg, a talented artist, jewelry designer, and model. She just embodies this openness and creativity that I think fits well within what I wanted to capture for this shoot.

What were your first impressions when you saw the results?

Honestly I didn’t know what to expect but was pleasantly surprised by the results! I think this film stock added a cinematic, mysterious quality that I feel is really different from other stocks I’ve used before.

How would you describe the look of the new LomoChrome Color ‘92 Sun-kissed ?

Cinematic and textured are two words that come to mind when thinking about Color ’92 Sun-kissed.

What do you think is the ideal situation for shooting this film?

I think shooting outside on a partly cloudy day, where you get little pockets of sun and shade would be perfect for using this film. The 400 ISO makes it pretty adaptable for shooting outdoors and I think partly cloudy days can be an exciting challenge.

Do you have a favorite shot taken with this film? Tell us about it.

My favorite is the one of Ariel at the bottom of the frame holding her two braids and you can just see her head and her bright yellow sock. I like that it’s just straightforward and a little silly at the same time.

Did you face any challenges during this shoot?

The weather! My initial inspiration was guided by the feeling of a warm spring day but in reality it was maybe 45 degrees and extremely windy. I kind of had to shift perspectives while shooting, which was a bit of a challenge, but in the end I’m happy with how we worked with the elements.

What advice would you give to others shooting with Color ‘92 Sun-kissed?

As always with Lomography film stocks, I advise anyone to get creative and shoot outside of their comfort zone. Don’t put so much pressure on yourself and instead use the roll as inspiration to try something new.

In your opinion, what makes a great photo?

A loaded question! A great photo to me feels natural and honest, which can be very different from person to person. I think the photos that stick with me the most (and I’m talking mostly about portraits here) are those that feel like a moment in thought or mid-conversation. I like the unpredictability of someone’s expression while they are telling a story or thinking about a memory.

A big thanks to Moriah for testing the film and sharing the results with us! If you'd like to follow her work, you can find her on Instagram or her website.
