First Impressions of the LomoChrome Color '92 Sun-kissed 35 mm Film by Calvin Ben
4After testing our original LomoChrome Color '92 film when it first came out, analogue photographer Calvin Ben is back to try out the brand new LomoChrome Color '92 Sun-kissed edition. Calvin took a roll with him on a day trip to Fuerteventura and back to Tenerife, where he lives. He loved the warm tones and the rich grain of the new emulsion! Let's have a look at his beautiful photos.
Hi Calvin, happy to have you back in our magazine! What have you been working on recently?
Thanks so much for inviting me again! A lot has happened in the meantime! I've been on a mission to explore and capture all the seven Canary Islands as each of them is very different and has its own flair!
Tell us about the concept for this shoot. What and where did you decide to photograph?
This shoot was a very spontaneous one. Most of the roll was shot on a day trip to the island of Fuerteventura. We had planned on visiting the south of the island, but when arriving it was unusually overcast. The solution was taking a drive to the north where I stumbled upon a quiet little fishing village with a small white sandy beach. I thought I would finish the roll on Fuerteventura but as we spent most the day in a car I still had some shots left to shoot on Tenerife. So I decided I'd also test how the film handles a sunset.
What were your first impressions when you saw the results?
Whilst scanning the film I was honestly pretty blown away at how beautifully warm the colors render. I usually try to color correct my film photos to give them a bit of a warmer feel. However, this film naturally looks perfect to me with no color adjustments needed. It's fair to say that I'll definitely be shooting this film more often in the future!
How would you describe the look of the new LomoChrome Color ‘92 Sun-kissed?
I'd say LomoChrome Color ‘92 Sun-kissed has a very nice texture to it, to me the look of the grain is perfect. As the name suggests it's also got a nice tint of warmness in it's color palette and the soft vibrant blue tones in the sea and sky really stand out and are unlike any other film I've shot before. Love it!
You also tried our original LomoChrome Color '92 film. How does this compare?
I like both films for different reasons. But personally the warmness of Color ‘92 Sun-kissed fits in better with my style. That said the new film still has that lovely grainy texture from the original. I'd say the warm color tones are subtle, you can definitely notice them in the highlights but when compared to the original LomoChrome Color ‘92 the color temperature is hugely different.
This film is crafted to capture the magic glow of golden-hour. How would you spend a perfect summer evening?
My ideal summer evening would definitely be spent with my feet in the sand at a beach, I'd have my camera in my hand and be shooting the sunset. This is exactly what I've done already with this film as can be seen in my photos.
What advice would you give to others shooting with the LomoChrome Color ‘92 Sun-kissed?
I think this film shines on sunny days. It's definitely the perfect film to capture those warm summer days. Also, definitely experiment with underexposing it a stop or so. I did this by accident as I wasn't using a light meter and instead guesstimating each exposure but I actually quite enjoy how the slightly underexposed photos turned out! And lastly, have fun!
