Seeing the World Through the LomoApparat's Kaleidoscope Lens

4

The kaleidoscope lens attachment is one of the accessories that comes with the LomoApparat which makes it truly a unique experimental camera.

But how exactly have our community members played with this attachment and put their own twist on it? In this gallery, we hope to inspire you to go out and see the world through kaleidoscopic lens with the help of our creative community members. Let's get into it!

For community member Sambhram Patel (@sambhramp), the LomoApparat is a great compact camera, especially for the features it packs. This comes as Sambhram was reintroduced to film photography through another compact format, the 110, which was also his first introduction to Lomography through its film stocks.

He said this took him "down the rabbit hole of pushing the exploration and experimentation with film, multiple exposure, kaleidoscope lenses etc.," where he eventually discovered the LomoApparat.

[The LomoApparat] provides a platform for a very interesting shooting style since you don't really know what you will end up with and very much shoot based on 'feel'. I've tried multiple film stocks on it and ended up feeling like color films worked the best based on what I was shooting, it actually made me explore color film more because I was largely focused on black and white before that.
I tended to choose stationary subjects that were easy to isolate in the middle of the frame, things like trees, statues, pillars, people with not much happening around them etc. I do want to explore more complex subjects and environments and see what comes of it, especially from a street perspective. I also feel trees and natural shapes can result in some really cool fractal images.
I'd say starting with simple subjects is good way to start. Also to experiment with multiple films and see what works best for your style. - @sambhramp

Meanwhile, community member @severinegodissart has a more subtle way of using the LomoApparat's kaleidoscope lens. She took the camera to the beach and with the help of the LomoChrome Purple, produced these dreamy shots reminiscent of a quiet and reflective walk by the seaside.

Maximing negative space by capturing the sea and the skies, @severinegodissart was able to give the serene environment a twist by using the kaleidoscope lens to take photos of certain subjects such as a companion, a twig, birds and more.

Germany-based photographer Styler (@007-0815-styler) finds many creative opportunities for the LomoApparat, saying that the kaleidoscope lens is the cherry-on-top when it comes to the camera's features. In our chat with him, he talked about his film background and how he came across the LomoApparat, eventually creating fun and distinct photos using the kaleidoscope lens and some gel filters.

I've been a Lomosapien since day one, having held all Lomo cameras in my hands, and I've always been a fan. But the new Lomo Apparat has truly thrilled me.
All these features that the camera brings with it are the reason why I fell in love with the LomoApparat, and the kaleidoscope is the cherry on top.
There are moments when I want to be deliberate and carefully consider the angle, timing, and subject of my photographs. But just as often, I shoot spontaneously. In the end, both approaches are an experiment. Especially with the kaleidoscope, you never know exactly how the lens will transform the image. One always has a small expectation when looking through the kaleidoscope attachment with the naked eye, but what the camera creates out of it when you attach it to the front is truly surprising.

Talking about tips, Styler recommends enough light when shooting with the LomoApparat, as with any analogue camera, as well as experimenting with the camera's different functions such as the lenses, multiple exposure and gel filters.

When using the kaleidoscope, multiple exposures, and colorful flash on the LomoApparat, my special tip would be to try out the different combinations with one subject at the beginning. By using the same subject, you can easily compare the results in the end. Lomo on and on!
