Hi, Rifan! It’s great to have you here at Lomography! Tell us about yourself and what you do.

Hello, I'm Rifan Wahyudi, a photographer based in Bandung and I really like the world of photography, specifically with portrait and documentary photography. Besides that I am also interested in the world of branding and brand development. Currently photography is still my main job.

How do you describe your photography?

I really like portrait and documentary photography, because I think it's very personal, a way to portray the people around you with the medium of photography and we can find various kinds of human characters. The most important thing is to be able to communicate those characters through my photography.

What is it like to be Rifan Wahyudi? How do you spend your days?

I love being myself, at least in the world of photography, it's important for now and the future because it's what keeps me excited and growing to this day.

I'm like most people when I'm not working, spending time with my family either at home or on vacation. Yes of course while seeing new things that can add to my point of view in seeing things.

What is it like to be a full time photographer in Bandung?

It's a great feeling to meet so many people, from in the photography industry to other creative fields. Photography connects it all.

For photo walks, as usual if I leave the house wherever I go there are interesting objects to photograph. Maybe today with the digital era so it is very easy to take pictures, therefore I still tend to respond to something with my mobile phone camera or pocket camera.

How did you like shooting with the Lomography Color Negative 800 120 ?

I like the part that limits me to shoot 15 frames. It makes me more present in the spaces and the objects in front of me. The color produced from Lomography Color Negative 800 120 is enough to bring me a sense of nostalgia.

Can you tell us about what you decided to shoot with the Lomography Color Negative 800 120? What do you think about the results?

I wanted to try it in a documentary project that I was working on. The results can really make me smile happily. After going through the film scanning, the images came out the way I expected. Again I was quite satisfied with the images and with all aspects produced with Lomography Color Negative 800 120.

Which is your favorite photo taken with this film?

I like the photo of people making batik patterns, because at that time the atmosphere was very solemn, with abundant light entering the window area of her house. Besides the aesthetic factor, the atmosphere at that time was also very calm and sentimental.

How was the overall experience of using this film? Any challenges?

I almost forgot to use film for my photography needs, because it's been a long time since I used a film camera. Usually I use a mirrorless with three lenses that I always carry.

It was quite a nostalgic experience when I was given the opportunity to use this film from Lomography. I had to calculate very well when taking pictures because the amount of shots was very limited. So the challenge was how to shoot and create a storyline so that the photos I produce can be in one whole story.

What is one thing you have been dying to explore further (anything from a place to a particular subject)? What is your dream project?

I want to learn more about people, listening to them tell stories from their daily lives and their culture that influences their characters to grow. It's really fun because it will add a new perspective in addressing my personal life.

My dream project is no longer to photograph great or superior people but to photograph the diversity of humans that I encounter in the course of my life with a personal perspective. I am well aware that one day my memory will begin to fade so photography will remind me of these things.

Tell us about some of the current projects you are working on. Do you have any projects in particular you are looking forward to?

I'm currently still running commercial photography projects because it's good to be able to support me and my family. Besides that I'm also working on a documentary photography project in areas in Indonesia. Hopefully this can be a photobook when it's finished later. I'm still compiling it.

Any messages other Lomographers out there?

The most important thing is not how you take pictures but how you put it in your personal perspective and knowledge, going out more to meet other human beings and reading more will help enrich your perspectives, rather than living in the virtual world that can waste your time.

Create a simple project that you can do with the thoughts that you have right now. Afterwards you will be amazed at what you have done.

Today the world is moving so fast and there are so many distractions. Too many choices are sometimes not good because it can break the focus. We must have value in ourselves and keep doing what we believe in.

Thank you to Rifan for sharing his photos, knowledge and experience with all of us! Keep up with his latest work at his Instagram and website.
